<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">My Dear Brothers and Sisters    </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Today’s khutbah is about the importance of building a strong community, a strong <i>Ummah</i>. The Holy Quran speaks of the justly-balanced community, <i>ummatan wasatan, </i>and it also describes the best of peoples as those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, <i>ata’muroona bil ma’roof, watan hawna ‘anil munkar, watu’ minoona bil-Laah.</i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">These words, of course, do not only apply to the worldwide family of Believers. It also applies to our local neighbourhoods and to small groups like we have here at Royal Holloway. We are indeed an <i>Ummah</i> in miniature. We, too have to invite to what is right and forbid what’s wrong. This principle goes right down to the individual. You and I must win the lifelong struggle against the lower <i>nafs, </i>the lower self. If we fail to do this, remember the words of Sura Ra’d </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">13:11.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<u><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">“Truly, Allah will not change the condition of a people, until they change what is within themselves [with their own souls].</span></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">From the very beginning, the birth and spread of Islam has been a communal effort. When Allah plants the seed of faith in our hearts, that seed has to be nourished and nurtured; it has to grow and mature, through our interaction with other people. There is no place for selfish individualism in Islam.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">The English poet, John Donne, wrote that “<u>No man is an island entire of itself; – Each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind…</u>” John Donne was expressing a deeply Islamic idea, that we are all interconnected, interdependent.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">The ethos of our beautiful <i>deen </i>is selfless service to others, out of love and gratitude to Allah. It’s not enough to simply thank Allah during our prayers, and to spend the rest of our time preoccupied exclusively with our own selfish concerns. Simply ‘minding our own business’ and ignoring the needs of the wider community is against the true spirit of Islam.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Allah says in His Noble Book, [Sura Nisaa’ ch4:v95]</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">“<u>Not equal are those Believers who sit [at home] and receive no discomfort, and those who strive in the Cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah has granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and their persons, than to those who sit [at home].</u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">From this verse, my dear Brothers and Sisters, we can see that Allah does not approve of those who sit around like lazy couch potatoes, passively watching the unfolding drama of their own lives around them. Islam never was and never will be a spectator sport. Islam is a religion of <u>action</u>. Islam requires us to be <u>active role players</u> in the betterment of our society. Wherever Muslims went throughout their long history, they improved the conditions of the people in those lands. Islam raised the status of people from nobodies to the leaders of civilization. The golden age of </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Spain, India, Turkey, Mauritania, Nigeria, Egypt and every other domain of Islam, was during the period of Muslim rule. This is the rich legacy of our illustrious and noble predecessors. Let us remember this and let us think what legacy we can leave for our future generations. Let us ask not only what we can do for ourselves, but what we can do for our neighbours and fellow citizens of this beautiful country.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Life in </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Britain has many blessings and many challenges. Here we enjoy freedom and security that is still only dreamed of in many Muslim lands. We enjoy freedom of speech and expression. We can buy and sell property, educate our children and enjoy a free health service. We can even become British citizens and vote in free and fair elections, another rare commodity in our Muslim homelands! But Britain also has many problems and we can play a big part in solving them. The social fabric is under stress, family life has become an endangered species, and many people are becoming aware of a spiritual emptiness in their lives. We Muslims have much to offer. We must show by our personal living example that Islam is a better way of life, a better way of <i>being.</i> But our priorities are wrong. We seem to think we need a huge <i>dawah </i>industry. But really, we shouldn't try so hard to ‘convert’ people to Islam. <u>That’s not our job. Allah chooses</u> <u>whom He pleases to guide.</u> He says so in His Book. We must simply try through our behaviour, to show our neighbours the living proof of Islam. In many places in Allah’s Holy Book, the Prophet Muhammad sws was reminded, that He should not be despondent when some people refuse his guidance. </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms"; font-size: 8pt;">[In Sura Nahl, 16:v82]:</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"> “<u>But if they turn away, your duty is only to preach the Clear Message</u>,” </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms"; font-size: 8pt;">[also in 24:54, 29:18, 36:17] </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Brothers and Sisters, we are not responsible for who accepts Allah’s guidance and who refuses it. Let’s concentrate on what Allah will hold us accountable for. Let’s build strong families and strong communities that <u>enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong</u>: <i>“ta’muroona bil ma’roof, wa tan hawna ‘anil munkar, wa tu’minoona bil-Laah.”</i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">If we fail to do this, my dear Brothers and Sisters, if we waste the wonderful opportunities we have, then Allah, and the future generations, our children and grand-children will not judge us kindly. If we do nothing to make our small community more dynamic, more active and productive, then Allah will withdraw His <i><u>barakah</u> </i>from us. We will be left with nothing but empty lives and wasted opportunities. Let us all pray and work hard to ensure that this does not happen!</span></div>

Allahumma salli alá Muhammad, wa ala áli Muhammad, kama salayta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali Ibrahim. Allahumma barik ala Muhammad, wa alaa áli Muhammad, kama barakta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali ibrahim. Fil ála meen, innaka hameedun majeed.”</span></i><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="color: blue; font-family: "comic sans ms";"> </span><u><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">"All glory is for Allah, and all praise is for Allah; There is no power and no strength except with Allah."</span></u></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Dear Brothers and Sisters,</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">There is a lovely word in the English language called, Synergy. I like this word, because it sums up what I think community life is all about. Synergy means, to combine individual efforts so that the result is much more than the sum of the parts. Mathematically we know that if I put 5 £1 coins together I have £5. But when five well motivated and well organised people work together, <u>their synergy delivers much more</u> than 5 individuals . The result is more like 5 x 1 = 50, not just 5. This isn’t a recent psychological theory. It’s a basic Islamic principle. 14 centuries years ago, the Holy Quran, </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms"; font-size: 8pt;">[in Sura Al-Anfal ch.8:v65]</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"> declared:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">“<u>O Prophet! Rouse the Believers to fight! If there are 20 amongst you, patient and persevering, they will defeat 200, if you are 100, you will defeat 1,000 of the unbelievers…”</u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">So, by Allah’s own formula, the efforts of sincere and hardworking Believers can deliver results by a factor of 1 equals 10. Mere decorations and occasional recitation upon the death of a family member are just some of the ways that the use and purpose of the Qur’an has been misconstrued. Sheikh Anwar Al-Awlaki explains and reminds the listener of the true purpose for the Quran’s revelation.<br />

The Sheikh looks at examples such as Ibn ‘Umar taking 14 years to memorize Surah Baqarah, whereas nowadays it could take as little as a few months. Why the discrepancy? It was due to their application of each ayat before moving on to another. One must remember to ponder, reflect and understand the Quran properly, thereby actualizing the true reason for its revelation.<br />

We all love our children, Alhamdulillah. We only want what is best for them and Shaytan (May Allah curse him) knows this. He is a very patient hunter who is so conniving that his prey is clueless to his grand scheme. He makes us believe at times that the things we do for our children so they feel included and not lacking are exactly what will make them healthy and well-rounded individuals. This is his delusion. He traps us in this web of deception where everything appears acceptable on the surface, but the darkness that lingers just underneath is both frightening and all consuming.<br />

    9. عن حذيفة رضي الله عنه، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن هذا ملك لم ينزل الأرض قط قبل هذه الليلة استأذن ربه أن يسلم عليّ و يبشّرني بأن فاطمة سيدة نساء أهل الجنة، وأن الحسن والحسين سيدا شباب أهل الجنة.<br />
<br />
Hudhaifah (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said, “There is an angel who before tonight had never come down to earth, asked permission from his Lord to offer slam (salutations) to me and to deliver the good news to me that Fatimah (sa) is the leader of all women of Paradise and Hasan (ra) and Husain (ra) are the leaders of all the youngsters in Paradise.”<br />
<br />
    10. عن علي ابن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لفاطمة رضي الله عنها: ألا ترضين أن تكوني سيدة نساء أهل الجنة و ابناك سيدا شباب أهل الجنة.<br />

Ali (as), the son of Abu Talib, narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said to Fatimah (sa), “Are you not happy that you are the leader of all women in Paradise and both of your sons are leaders of all youth in Paradise.”<br />

    11. عن بن عباس رضي الله عنه، قال: خط رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الأرض أربعة خطوط. قال: تدرون ما هذا؟ فقالوا: الله و رسوله أعلم. فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: أفضل نساء أهل الجنة: خديجة بنت خويلد، و فاطمة بنت محمد، و آسية بنت مزاحم امرأة فرعون، و مريم ابنة عمران رضي الله عنهن اجمعين.<br />

Abdullah bin Abbas (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) drew four lines in the ground and asked, “Do you know what this is?” The companions replied, “Allah (SWT) and His Messenger (saw) know better.” Then the Holy Prophet (saw) said, “From the women of Paradise four are superior to others: Khadijah the daughter of Khuwaylid, Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad, Asiyah the daughter of Mazahim the wife of Pharaoh and Maryam the daughter of Imran (ra).”<br />
<br />

يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ<br />
‘O those who believe, the fasts have been enjoined upon you as were enjoined upon those before so that you be God-fearing.’ [Surah Baqarah, 183]<br />
<br />
Literally, Sawm means ‘to abstain’. In the terminology of Islamic law, Sawm means ‘to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse: with the conditions that one abstains continuously from dawn to sunset, and that there is an intention to fast.’ Therefore, should one eat or drink anything even a minute before sunset, the fast will not be valid. Similarly, if one abstained from all these things throughout the day but made no intention to fast, there will be no fast here too.<br />

Past communities and the injunction to fast<br />
The verse makes it obligatory for the Muslims to fast in a specified period, but the command in the respect has been accompanied by the statement that the obligation of fasting is not peculiar to them. The fasting had also been enjoined upon the earlier Ummahs (communities of the past prophets). The reference to the earlier Ummahs in the verse shows the importance of fasting on the one hand, and gives an encouragement to the Muslims on the other. It indicates that although there may be some inconvenience in fasting but the same inconvenience was faced by earlier communities. This brings a psychological comfort to the Muslims, because if an inconvenience is faced by a large number of people, it becomes easier to bear. (Ruh al Ma’ani)<br />

The words of the Qur’an ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ (those before you) have been used in general sense including all religious communities from Sayyidina Adam to the last of the Prophets (peace and blessings upon him). This tells us that, like Salah, fasting has also been enjoined upon every Ummah of every prophet without exception.<br />

Commentators who interpret مِن قَبْلِكُمْ (before you) to mean ‘the Christians’ take it just as an example, not aiming to exclude other communities. (Ruh al Ma’ani)<br />

The verse simply says that fasts have been enjoined on Muslims as were enjoined on past communities. From this it does not necessarily follow that the fasts enjoined upon the earlier communities were fully identical in all respects with the fasts enjoined upon this Ummah. There may have been difference in the number and the timings of the fasts etc. and, actually, there has been such a difference. (Ruh al Ma’ani)<br />

By saying لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ (so that you be God-fearing), the text has pointed out to the inherent quality of fasting which contributes significantly to one’s ability to become abstaining from the sins and God-fearing. Fasting grows into man a power which helps him control his desires, which is really the foundation of Taqwa, the very special term of the Holy Qur’an which has been tentatively translated as fear of God, abstinence, and the warding of evil.<br />
