Women in the Quran and the Sunnah

In Islam there is absolutely no difference between men and women as far as their relationship to Allah is concerned, as both are promised the same reward for good conduct and the same punishment for evil conduct. The Quran says:</div>

"And for women are rights over men similar to those of men over women." [Noble Quran 2:228]<br />
<br />
The Quran, in addressing the believers, often uses the expression, 'believing men and women' to emphasize the equality of men and women in regard to their respective duties, rights, virtues and merits. It says:<br />

"For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who fast, for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah's praise, for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward." [Noble Quran 33:35]<br />
<br />
This clearly contradicts the assertion of the Christian Fathers that women do not possess souls and that they will exist as sexless beings in the next life. The Quran says that women have souls in exactly the same way as men and will enter Paradise if they do good:<br />
<br />
"Enter into Paradise, you and your wives, with delight." [Noble Quran 43:70]<br />
<br />
"Who so does that which is right, and believes, whether male or female, him or her will We quicken to happy life." [Noble Quran 16:97]<br />
<br />
The Quran admonishes those men who oppress or ill-treat women:<br />
<br />
"O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the dowry you have given them - except when they have become guilty of open lewdness. On the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If you take a dislike to them, it may be that you dislike something and Allah will bring about through it a great deal of good." [Noble Quran 4:19]<br />
<br />
Considering the fact that before the advent of Islam the pagan Arabs used to bury their female children alive, make women dance naked in the vicinity of the Ka'bah during their annual fairs, and treat women as mere chattels and objects of sexual pleasure possessing no rights or position whatsoever, these teachings of the Noble Quran were revolutionary. Unlike other religions, which regarded women as being possessed of inherent sin and wickedness and men as being possessed of inherent virtue and nobility, Islam regards men and women as being of the same essence created from a single soul. The Quran declares:<br />
<br />
"O mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, his mate, and from this pair scattered (like seeds) countless men and women. Reverence Allah, through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and reverence the wombs (that bore you); for Allah ever watches over you." [Noble Quran 4:1]<br />
<br />
The Prophet of Islam (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Women are the twin halves of men." The Quran emphasizes the essential unity of men and women in a most beautiful simile:<br />
<br />
"They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them." [Noble Quran 2:187]<br />
<br />
Just as a garment hides our nakedness, so do husband and wife, by entering into the relationship of marriage, secure each other's chastity. The garment gives comfort to the body; so does the husband find comfort in his wife's company and she in his. "The garment is the grace, the beauty, the embellishment of the body, so too are wives to their husbands as their husbands are to them." Islam does not consider woman "an instrument of the Devil", but rather the Quran calls her Muhsana - a fortress against Satan because a good woman, by marrying a man, helps him keep to the path of rectitude in his life. It is for this reason that marriage was considered by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) as a most virtuous act. He said: "When a man marries, he has completed one half of his religion." He enjoined matrimony on Muslims by saying: "Marriage is part of my way and whoever keeps away from my way is not from me (i.e. is not my follower)." The Quran has given the raison d'�tre of marriage in the following words:<br />
<br />
"And among His signs is this, that He has created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them; and He has put love and mercy between you. Verily in that are signs for those who reflect." [Noble Quran 30:21]<br />

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) was full of praise for virtuous and chaste women. He said:<br />
<br />
"The world and all things in the world are precious but the most precious thing in the world is a virtuous woman. He once told the future Khalifah, 'Umar: "Shall I not inform you about the best treasure a man can hoard? It is a virtuous wife who pleases him whenever he looks towards her, and who guards herself when he is absent from her."<br />
<br />
On other occasions the Prophet said:<br />
<br />
"The best property a man can have is a remembering tongue (about Allah), a grateful heart and a believing wife who helps him in his faith." And again: "The world, the whole of it, is a commodity and the best of the commodities of the world is a virtuous wife."<br />
<br />
Before the advent of Islam women were often treated worse than animals. The Prophet wanted to put a stop to all cruelties to women. He preached kindness towards them. He told the Muslims: "Fear Allah in respect of women." And: "The best of you are they who behave best to their wives." And: "A Muslim must not hate his wife, and if he be displeased with one bad quality in her, let him be pleased with one that is good." And: "The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is."<br />
<br />
The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) was most emphatic in enjoining upon Muslims to be kind to their women when he delivered his famous Khutbah on the Mount of Mercy at Arafat in the presence of one hundred and twenty-four thousand of his Companions who had gathered there for the Hajj al-Wada (Farewell Pilgrimage). In it he ordered those present, and through them all those Muslims who were to come later, to be respectful and kind towards women. He said:<br />
<br />
"Fear Allah regarding women. Verily you have married them with the trust of Allah, and made their bodies lawful with the word of Allah. You have got (rights) over them, and they have got (rights) over you in respect of their food and clothing according to your means."<br />

In Islam a woman is a completely independent personality. She can make any contract or bequest in her own name. She is entitled to inherit in her position as mother, as wife, as sister and as daughter. She has perfect liberty to choose her husband. The pagan society of pre-Islamic Arabia had an irrational prejudice against their female children whom they used to bury alive. The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) was totally opposed to this practice. He showed them that supporting their female children would act as a screen for them against the fire of Hell:<br />
<br />
It is narrated by the Prophet's wife, Ayshah, that a woman entered her house with two of her daughters. She asked for charity but Ayshah could not find anything except a date, which was given to her. The woman divided it between her two daughters and did not eat any herself. Then she got up and left. When the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house, Ayshah told him about what had happened and he declared that when the woman was brought to account (on the Day of Judgment) about her two daughters they would act as a screen for her from the fires of Hell.<br />
<br />
The worst calamity for a woman is when her husband passes away and, as a widow, the responsibility of maintaining the children falls upon her. In the Eastern World, where a woman does not always go out to earn her living, the problems of widowhood are indescribable. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) upheld the cause of widows. Most of his wives were widows. In an age when widows were rarely permitted to remarry, the Prophet encouraged his followers to marry them. He was always ready to help widows and exhorted his followers to do the same. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet said: "One who makes efforts (to help) the widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) in the path of Allah, or like one who stands up for prayers in the night and fasts in the day."<br />
<br />
Woman as mother commands great respect in Islam. The Noble Quran speaks of the rights of the mother in a number of verses. It enjoins Muslims to show respect to their mothers and serve them well even if they are still unbelievers. The Prophet states emphatically that the rights of the mother are paramount. Abu Hurairah reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is the person who has the greatest right on me with regards to kindness and attention?" He replied, "Your mother." "Then who?" He replied, "Your mother." "Then who?" He replied, "Your mother." "Then who?" He replied, "Your father."<br />
<br />
In another tradition, the Prophet advised a believer not to join the war against the Quraysh in defense of Islam, but to look after his mother, saying that his service to his mother would be a cause of his salvation. Mu'awiyah, the son of Jahimah, reported that Jahimah came to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Messenger of Allah! I want to join the fighting (in the path of Allah) and I have come to seek your advice." He said, "Then remain in your mother's service, because Paradise is under her feet."<br />
<br />
The Prophet's followers accepted his teachings and brought about a revolution in their social attitude towards women. They no longer considered women as mere chattels, but as an integral part of society. For the first time women were given the right to have a share in inheritance. In the new social climate, women rediscovered themselves and became highly active members of society rendering useful service during the wars which the pagan Arabs forced on the emerging Muslim Ummah. They carried provisions for the soldiers, nursed them, and even fought alongside them if it was necessary. It became a common sight to see women helping their husbands in the fields, carrying on trade and business independently, and going out of their homes to satisfy their needs.<br />

Ayshah reported that Sawdah bint Zam'ah went out one night. 'Umar saw her and recognized her and said, "By God, O Sawdah, why do you not hide yourself from us?" She went back to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it while he was having supper in her room, and he said, "It is permitted by Allah for you to go out for your needs." The predominant idea in the teachings of Islam with regard to men and women is that a husband and wife should be full-fledged partners in making their home a happy and prosperous place, that they should be loyal and faithful to one another, and genuinely interested in each other's welfare and the welfare of their children. A woman is expected to exercise a humanizing influence over her husband and to soften the sternness inherent in his nature. A man is enjoined to educate the women in his care so that they cultivate the qualities in which they, by their very nature, excel.<br />
<br />
These aspects were much emphasized by the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him). He exhorted men to marry women of piety and women to be faithful to their husbands and kind to their children. He said:<br />
<br />
"Among my followers the best of men are those who are best to their wives, and the best of women are those who are best to their husbands. To each of such women is set down a reward equivalent to the reward of a thousand martyrs. Among my followers, again, the best of women are those who assist their husbands in their work, and love them dearly for everything, save what is a transgression of Allah's laws."<br />
<br />
Once Mu'awiyah asked the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), "What are the rights that a wife has over her husband?" The Prophet replied, "Feed her when you take your food, give her clothes to wear when you wear clothes, refrain from giving her a slap on the face or abusing her, and do not separate from your wife, except within the house." Once a woman came to the Prophet with a complaint against her husband. He told her: "There is no woman who removes something to replace it in its proper place, with a view to tidying her husband's house, but that Allah sets it down as a virtue for her. Nor is there a man who walks with his wife hand-in-hand, but that Allah sets it down as a virtue for him; and if he puts his arm round her shoulder in love, his virtue is increased tenfold." Once he was heard praising the women of the tribe of Quraysh, "...because they are the kindest to their children while they are infants and because they keep a careful watch over the belongings of their husbands."<br />

The Shari'ah regards women as the spiritual and intellectual equals of men. The main distinction it makes between them is in the physical realm based on the equitable principle of fair division of labor. It allots the more strenuous work to the man and makes him responsible for the maintenance of the family. It allots the work of managing the home and the upbringing and training of children to the woman, work which has the greatest importance in the task of building a healthy and prosperous society.<br />
<br />
It is a fact, however, that sound administration within the domestic field is impossible without a unified policy. For this reason the Shari'ah requires a man, as head of the family, to consult with his family and then to have the final say in decisions concerning it. In doing so he must not abuse his prerogative to cause any injury to his wife. Any transgression of this principle involves for him the risk of losing the favor of Allah, because his wife is not his subordinate but she is, to use the words of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), 'the queen of her house', and this is the position a true believer is expected to give his wife. In contrast to these enlightened teachings of Islam in respect of women, Western talk of women's liberation or emancipation is actually a disguised form of exploitation of her body, deprivation of her honor, and degradation of her soul!<br />

Islam and sincerity of Muslims to the Qur’an

Islam is established to create a divine culture capable of enhancing the spiritual and material development of the individual and society. Islamic culture is based on monotheism imbued with ingredients for social, political, ethical, legal, economic developments and protection of lives and properties.<br />
<br />
The Qur’an condemns anarchy, lawlessness and disorder. It enhances social values by asking Muslims to eschew the evil and enjoin the good (Q3:104), to uphold justice; and eschew violence and to render back trusts (Q4:58). None of these lofty goals can be achieved without sincerity!<br />
<br />
<u><b>Why insincerity abounds</b></u><br />
<br />
<b>Lack of proper home training:</b> Woman is regarded as the first point of contact between the infant, and the concept or ideas he or she holds for the Almighty Allah, the community where-in he or she lives and his or her global perspective. Being the first teacher in the life of a child, Islam encourages the mother to seek positive knowledge and impact them on their wards.<br />
<br />
The Prophet said: Seeking knowledge is mandatory on Muslim male and female.<br />
-    Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.<br />
-   Teach a woman and you have taught a nation.<br />
<br />
The aforementioned ahadith emphasize the importance of equipping women with knowledge. The Islamic objective here is the training of women who will be capable of upbringing youths capable of making positive contributions to their respective community and to global development. Unfortunately, the situation is the opposite because lack of sincerity in marriage has turned so many married women to single mothers who often bring up children with transfer aggression resulting from pains of marital separation.<br />
<br />
<b>Insincerity in the political Sector:</b> Most problems that are confronting this generation emanate from absence of fair hearing as well as refusal to uphold justice, whereas the Qur’an has already stated clearly: … Let not the hatred of other people to you swerve you to wrong and make you unjust. Be just, it is closer to piety. (Q5:8).<br />
<br />
Whosoever sees wrong shall correct it with his hand; if he could not, then he should correct it with his tongue; if he could not, then he should correct it with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith. (Transmitted by Imam Muslim.)<br />
<br />
Even if a person is a tyrant, that should not deter a good Muslim from correcting a wrong-doer, although it might be costly. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said: The best struggle (jihad) is a word of truth before a tyrant ruler. (Imam An-Nasa’i)<br />
<br />
Another problem confronting human society is refusal to support workers on the part of truth. Allah calls the believers to compete in doing good thus: ….help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancor….(Q5 :2)<br />
<br />
….Let there arise out of you  a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong……(Q3: 104)<br />
<br />
The instruction in the quoted verses can be divided into two sections namely: dos and don’ts. Allah promised to work in accord with mankind so long as they cooperate in doing good. He (SWT) also warns them against joining hands to commit or spread evils. Obeying the divine instruction gives man peace, happiness and tranquility in both worlds while embarking on evil deeds and joining the multitude on wrong causes can only lead man to doom and perdition.<br />
<br />
In order to overcome this kind of situation, the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) instructed. Let not any one of you be a blind follower who says, “If people do good, I will be good, and if they do wrong, I will do the same”. But you should stick to righteousness ….(At-Tirmidhi transmitted it).<br />
<br />
<b>Insincerity in religious Sector:</b> Scholars of religions are not also free from the blame. Some if not most of them only preach along areas that favours them, while tactfully avoiding preaching with verses that seem to condemn their evil deeds.<br />
<br />
<b>Repercussions of lack of sincerity</b><br />
Social insecurity that abounds everywhere in the world today is not imported from heaven. It is purely manufactured by man. It is clearly stated in the Qur’an:   Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of the evil deeds that the hands of men have earned, that Allah may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back (from evil). (Q30 [Ar-Rum]:41)<br />
 Importance of sincerity in the life of a muslim<br />
<br />
Sincerity is the prime condition for the validity of deeds in the sight of Allah. Allah is pure and will never accept any deed except if it is good and pure. <br />
<br />
Just as show off, pomposity and boasting renders good work to naught so also sincerity and undiluted devotion magnifies small deed so much that it will attract enormous rewards.<br />
<br />
A young man or woman who sincerely prays to Allah to bless him or her so as to become married will not only receive divine help to accomplish the objective, he or she will continue to receive rewards for going into legitimate sexual intercourse. Whoever wants to have a child who will worship Allah will have the reward even he or she does not have a single child.<br />
<br />
Sincerity is an effective means of curbing distress because it reassures hope when it seem all hopes were lost. A good example is the case of three young men who were on a journey and ran into a cave for safety when it was about to rain and there was heavy blow of wind. The first sincerely obeyed his parents for the sake of Allah. The second sincerely avoided fornication with a lady at a point of no return for the sake of Allah.<br />
<br />
Sincerity is required if we truly want to form lasting relationships, build happy homes, form peaceful society and live in a world where everyone can legitimately achieve good aims and laudable objectives.<br />
<br />
<b>Concluding remarks</b><br />
Islam, being a complete way of life, has placed enormous priorities on sincerity to Allah and to the generality of mankind. Our objective and honest recommendations therefore, Muslims should allow the various ethics of Islam discussed in this presentation to regulate their actions and reactions and to inform their approaches to mundane and spiritual matters.<br />
<br />
We need to address various challenges facing the world with righteousness and fear of Allah.<br />

Too often in the news, Islam is only associated with terrorism and fanaticism. An uninformed viewer may think to himself: How could anyone in their right minds find inspiration and solace from such a faith? But, to billions of people, Islam is their avenue for seeking liberation and peace.<br />
<br />
My spiritual journey, believe it or not, began on a dull evening with a lot of time to spare on my hands. It so happened that on that particular day, the electricity was down in my home, and I couldn't find anything to do. Browsing through my cellphone, I stumbled across a Quran app I had downloaded earlier. And, for some reason, I felt an urge to finally read the book I professed to "believe" in. Within the next few days, I had finished it.<br />
<br />
The Quran, I found, was truly a fascinating book: very different to how some Muslims practice Islam. Above all, it was a book I could very much relate to, and find answers to the dilemmas I often thought about. Naturally, the more time I spent with it, the more it seemed to give me back. Thus, as I went deeper and deeper into the Quran, I was left mesmerized by its structure, cohesiveness, and the language it employs that happened to reflect my own being so precisely.<br />
<br />
Through all the ups and downs - the sudden moments of euphoria and multiple crises of faith - it is fair to say that this journey completely changed me for the better. It liberated me from an ordinary existence and gave my life a meaning, and a purpose.<br />
<br />
<b>Without further ado, here are 6 things I love most about the Quran:</b><br />

<b>1- The Quran Encourages People to Contemplate & Think For Themselves</b><br />
<br />
Indeed, the most disliked created beings in the Sight of God are the deaf and the dumb who do not use their intellect. (Quran, 8:22)<br />
<br />
You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them. (Quran, 17:36)<br />
<br />
When I first started reading the Quran, my paradigm was drastically different to what it is now. Back then, whether a particular interpretation or belief was rational or not wasn't a prerequisite for believing in it. "It was the word of God, after all!", I thought, "Dare I question it?"<br />
<br />
However, it was the Quran, with its repeated emphasis on questioning and contemplation, that made me realize the merits of free-thought. The profound statement, "Will you, then, not think?" appears numerous times in the Quran, and at regular intervals! Gradually, instead of simply believing everything I heard and read, I started analyzing things.<br />
<br />
And that has truly changed my world for the better.<br />
<br />
When I hear some new-atheists say that the Quran is a medieval book that suppresses freedom of thought and is an exercise in surrendering the mind, I find myself shaking my head in disbelief. "Have these folks even read the Quran?", I think to myself.<br />
<br />
The idea that religion suppresses free thought and encourages blind belief certainly is, by no means, representative of the Quran. In fact, the opposite is true: those who do not reason are vehemently condemned (Quran 10:100) and are considered "no different from animals" (Quran 25:44). It is this emphasis on free-thought and acquiring knowledge that ultimately led to what we call "The Golden Age of Islam".<br />
<br />
However, a thinking population is always dangerous to the status quo, and hence these verses were gradually brushed aside, replaced by a bizarre sentiment of blindly following those in power (whether religious, or political). Add to that the notion of a heavenly reward for reading the Quran in Arabic (even for non-Arabic speakers) promoted by the clergy, and you've got a largely ignorant population at the whims of what religious figures teach them about Islam.<br />
<br />
<b>2- The Quran Discourages Blindly Following Ancestral Ways and Religious Preachers</b><br />
<br />
O you who believe, many religious leaders and preachers take people's money illicitly, and repel from the path of God. (Quran, 9:34)<br />
<br />
And they (the common people) will say: O our Sustainer! Behold, we paid heed unto our leaders and our great men, and it is they who have led us astray from the right path! (Quran, 33:67)<br />
<br />
If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will lead you astray from God's way. Most of the people follow nothing but conjecture and they only live by guesswork. (Quran, 6:116)<br />
<br />
It would come as a surprise to many (even Muslims who haven't read the Quran) that the Quran warns people about the dubious ways of many religious preachers, and asks people to be wary of them. A religion that was only devised to control and cheat people would never expose religious preachers like this, for it would be against their very interests!<br />
<br />
Time and time again, we find passages in the Quran about people blaming themselves on the Day of Accountability because they had not reasoned for themselves, and had blindly adopted the ways of their ancestors and/or religious and political leaders. These serve as excellent reminders to continually re-evaluate one's beliefs. As Mark Twain also once said, "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect."<br />
<br />
What did I learn from these verses? That just because a belief and/or practice is popular and accepted by many does not necessarily make it true or beneficial. These verses have taught me to question everything - be they cultural norms, religious opinions or whatever else.<br />

<b>3- The Quran Promotes Pluralism & Acknowledges There Being Multiple Paths to God</b><br />
<br />
Surely, those who believe (in the Qur'an and call themselves Muslims), and those who are Jews, and Christians and the Sabians; whoever acknowledges God, The Day of Accountability, and does acts of reformation - their reward is with their Sustainer. For them shall be no fear from without, nor shall grief touch them from within. (Quran, 2:62)<br />
<br />
As for those who sincerely strive for Us, We shall most certainly guide them onto paths that lead unto Us: for, behold, God is indeed with the doers of good. (Quran, 29:69)<br />
<br />
Sectarianism thrives on the idea of there being only one correct way to worship and serve God. By acknowledging that there are, in fact, multiple paths that lead to God, the Quran entirely discredits and nullifies sectarianism.<br />
<br />
Truth be told, there was a time when I believed only I and people who shared my beliefs were "rightly guided." However, these verses eventually changed my stance for the better. They made me realize that no faith or school of thought has a monopoly on truth, and that has really "broadened my horizons", so to speak. Irrespective of where a truth comes from, a truth is a truth and should be accepted on its own merit. And, what a liberating thought this is!<br />
<br />
<b>4--The Quran Champions Freedom of Conscience.</b><br />
<br />
"If your Sustainer willed, all who are on earth, would have believed (by not providing free will). Would you then, compel people to become believers?" (Quran, 10:99)<br />
<br />
"There is no compulsion in matters of faith." (Quran, 2:256)<br />
<br />
Despite what some modern Muslim majority states do in the name of God (namely, anti-blasphemy & apostasy laws), the Quran advocates total freedom of speech and expression. This is, after all, a fundamental human right. Otherwise, what would be the point in endowing human beings with free-will?<br />
<br />

<b>5- The Quran Asks Muslims to Be Social Activists</b><br />
<br />
O You who have chosen to be graced with belief! Stand up firmly for justice, witnesses for God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents and your relatives, and whether the case is of a rich person or a poor person. God is nearer to them than you are.<br />
<br />
Do not follow your emotions lest you fall short of justice. If you distort your testimony or turn away (from this command, know that) God is Aware of all your actions. (Quran, 4:135)<br />
<br />
The Quranic program is centered in the pursuit of social justice, and fighting oppression. Islam is not a faith that only gives you a dogma to believe in, in return for paradise; but rather expects you to utilize your resources in helping the vulnerable and in becoming agents of peace and justice!<br />
<br />
This repeated emphasis on social and economic justice by the Quran has restored my belief in my capabilities that I can make a difference, no matter how small. It has inspired me to be more involved in my community, and help those in need.<br />
<br />
<b>6- The Quran Considers Belief as a Means to an End, and Not an End in Itself:</b><br />
<br />
Do people think that they will be left (at ease) simply because they say, "We believe", and will not be put to test? (Quran, 29:2)<br />
<br />
I am so glad that this verse is so explicit, because so many religious people (Muslims included) today exhaust all their energies on "believing this" and "believing that", all the while failing to translate that belief into some meaningful action. It is unfortunate that for many, religion has devolved into a list of things they must believe in, in order to be eligible for paradise.<br />
<br />
But, it is what you do that is the main concern of the Quran: how you translate that belief into action. And this teaches me that "believing" in values like honesty, justice, loyalty etc. is not the point - living these values is.<br />
<br />
And that's how my faith inspires me to evolve as a human being!<br />

The other names used for the Golden Mean are the Golden Ratio, extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportion, golden cut, golden number, and mean of Phidias.<br />
<br />
The Holy Qur’an reveals that God has raised heavens and has set up a measure for them.<br />
<br />
“And the heaven He has raised high and set up a measure”( Al Qur’an 55:8)<br />
<br />
The Golden Ratio is one such measure which is extensively applied in nature. It is represented with Greek letter phi in the mathematical calculations and its value is always 1.6180339887…..<br />
<br />

It comprises the unaltered and direct words of God, revealed through the Angel Gibrael, to the final Prophet, Muhammad (pbuh)1 some 1400 years ago. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial";">Muslims believe that the Quran is the Speech of God and not a book written by Muhammad (pbuh) himself.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial";">Islam is a continuation of the teachings of previous Prophets, such as Noah, Abraham, David, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them all), some of whom were also given divine books. Muslims believe that the key message brought by all Prophets was the same; to believe in One God and not to associate partners with Him, to stay away from sins and to lead a life devoted to earning Gods pleasure. All Prophets taught about life after death and gave glad tidings of paradise for those who obey God, but warned of punishment in hell for those who choose to disobey Him.</span><br />

The Quran is unique because it is the only revealed book that exists today in the precise form and content in which it was originally revealed. Furthermore, it was actively recorded during the time the religion was being established.<br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial";">The distinctive approach of the Quran is that its spiritual message includes practical injunctions aimed at the general welfare of human beings, society and the environment in which we live. The Qurans message is eternal and universal, transcending our differences in race, color, ethnicity and nationality. It provides guidance on every aspect of human life, from economics and the ethics of trade to marriage, divorce, gender issues, inheritance and parenting. It neither condemns nor tortures the flesh nor does it neglect the soul. It does not humanize God, nor does it deify man. </span></span><br />

Dear brothers and sisters:<br />
Today I will deal with important Surah, which is called Surah al-Mu’minun chapter<br />
number 23. In this Surah, Allah mentions at the beginning of the Surah the characteristics of the believers, and promises great reward for those who have these attributes. As Muslims, we should have these characteristics and avoid its opposites.<br />
<br />
Umar Ibn al-Khattab says, ‘When the revelation came to the Prophet, we used to see that in his face. Then we waited for a while and then he faced the Qiblah and raised his hands saying, ‘O Allah, give us more and not to decrease from us; honour us and not humiliate us; provide for us and not to deprive us... then he said, ‘Ten verses have been revealed to me, and whoever establishes them will succeed, then he recited, ‘Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive. And they who turn away from ill speech; And they who are observant of zakah, And they who guard their private parts, Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed –<br />
But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors – And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive, And they who carefully maintain their prayers – Those are the inheritors- Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally. [23:11]<br />

Dear brothers and sisters:<br />
Surat al-Mu’minun is makkan Surah starts with confirmation of success to those who have these characteristics. In the end of the Surah, confirmation of failure for those who disbelieve is also mentioned. The Surah says, ‘Surely, disbelievers will not succeed.’ [23:217]<br />
<br />
The Surah also mentions signs and proofs in the creation of human and mentions the stages of this creation. The Surah says, ‘And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay; Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging; Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation.<br />
<br />
So blessed is Allah, the best of creators; Then indeed, after that you are to die; Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected; [23:12-16]<br />
<br />
Then the Surah moves to another subject which is the signs in the creation of the universe and the favors of Allah upon his creatures. Among these signs and favors is water which is sent down to make everything alive.’<br />
<br />
The Surah mentions, ‘And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware; And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away…’ [23:17-18]<br />

Then the Surah calls us to contemplate in ponder over the benefits of this water to the human, to animals, and to plants. The verses say, ‘And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat; And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat;<br />
And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat; And upon them and on ships you are carried…’ [23:19:22]. This refers to the favors of Allah upon us that we should thank Him for. What I mean by thanking Allah is to look after these creations i.e. plants, water, and animals because they are created for our benefits.<br />
<br />
Dear brothers and sisters:<br />
Then the Surah moves on to deal with a different subject which is the mission of prophets and messengers since Noah till Muhammad [pbuh]. Their mission is to worship Allah alone and not make partner with him; to spread justice and prevent injustice; and to call for good and for avoiding evil.<br />
The Surah says, ‘And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?” [23:23]<br />
Then the Surah calls all prophets and messengers to eat the good food and do good deeds. The Surah mentions: [Allah said], “O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I, of what you do, am Knowing…’ [23:51]<br />
<br />
The verse also refers that even prophets and messengers should eat from what their hand earn as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) mentioned when praises those who eat from what their hand earn as prophet David did when he used to eat from what his hand earn.<br />
<br />
Dear brothers and sisters:<br />
The Surah again mentions other descriptions of the believers: the Surah says, ‘Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord; And they who believe in the signs of their Lord; And they who do not associate anything with their Lord; And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord; It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein…’ [23:57:61]<br />

The Surah also offers questions to the disbelievers to show them His power, His Sovereignty over this world. The Surah also deals with divine commandments and teachings for Muslims. Among these teachings is to be tolerant, patient, and forgiving toward others. It mentions, ‘Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe…’ [23:96]<br />
<br />
Among the other teachings in the Surah is that Allah teaches His Prophet how to seek refuge from Satan, and to ask Allah’s protection from His whispers and insinuations. The Surah mentions: ‘And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils…’ [23:<br />

We should contemplate the meaning of the Surah and learn from the lessons it contains, for this will make us among the successful.<br />

Finnish public broadcasting is reading the Quran — all of it, a half-hour at a time.<br />

Radio 1, the radio arm of broadcaster Yle, will begin reading Islam's holy book on March 7 in 60 installments of a half-hour each.<br />
<br />
The readings will begin with a discussion between Anas Hajjar, an imam from the Islamic Society of Finland, and professor Jaakko Hameen-Anttila, who translated the Quran into Finnish.<br />
<br />
"In these introductory discussions, the two men will explore the religious and historical context of the text to be read," Yle said in a story on its website.<br />
<br />
<br />
"It's nice to hear my translation be read aloud. It is important that the Quran is read in its entirety, and not just select items that show that Islam is bad and violent or good and beautiful," Hameen-Anttila told Yle.<br />
<br />
He said that he and Hajjar discussed "everything between heaven and Earth" while recording the series.<br />
<br />
"We haven't been at loggerheads, but Imam Anas Hajjar and I have often read the same passage and approached it from a very different point of view," he told Yle. "Imam Hajjar reads practical, contemporary meanings into the text and I see it as an historic work that is tied to the time in which it was created."<br />
<br />
Fewer than 50,000 Muslims live in Finland, which has a population of about 5 million, the Pew Research Center says.<br />
