“As-salámu 'alaikum wa rahmatul láhi wa barakátuh!”  [Wait for adhán] 
 
“A-úthu billáhi minash shaytánir rajeem.  Bismilláhir rahmánir raheem. 
 
Al hamdu lillahi nahmaduhu wanasta’eenahu, wanastagh-firuhu, wanatoobu ilayhi, wana’oothu Billaahi min shuroori an-fusinaa, wamin sayyi aati a’maalinaa. 
 
May- Yahdillahu fa huwal muhtad, wa may- yudlill falan tajidaa lahu waliyan murshida. Wa ash-hadu an Laa ilaaha ill-Alláh, wahdahoo laa shareeka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhoo warasooluh” 
 
All Praise is due to Alláh, We praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our own evils and our own bad deeds. 
 
Anyone who is guided by Alláh, he is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. 
 
I bear witness that there is no god but Alláh, the Only One without any partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad, sws, is His servant, and His messenger. 
 
My respected Brothers and Sisters in Islam, 
 
 Football fever is all around us these days. And those who know the game will tell you that it’s all about scoring goals. Our khutbah today is also about goals, but goals of a different kind. I want us to think about the goals we all strive for, throughout life: our lifetime goals. 
 
 Britain today is a country of many cultures. We speak different languages and our parents have come from many different parts of the world. Yet I am sure each one of us is likely to have some burning ambition, some clear objective or ideal that drives us forward through each day. It may be a deadline for our homework or coursework, it may be a forthcoming exam or a karate or Tae-kwondo grading session, or we may be working towards a particular career that we want to pursue after leaving school. Consciously or subconsciously, we all have short term, medium or long-term goals, which we hope to achieve before our life is over. The difference from soccer is that in real life, no one knows when the final whistle will blow. No one knows just how, when and where our life will end. Muslims are reminded to live each day as if it is our last day, and to pray every prayer as if it is our last prayer. We must therefore be totally focussed and sincere in what we do. 
 
In order to achieve any goal, there is nearly always an economic dimension. We need money to get things done. No matter how noble or generous we want to be, we still need some degree of financial independence for ourselves, in order to get what we want. This is simply in the nature of things. We may not want to be wealthy just for own sake, to show off and live a flashy lifestyle, but, in order to be more effective in society we must be able to stand on our own feet financially. 
 
Therefore, we need to work to earn money to do what we would like to do. The danger is that the means can sometimes become the end in itself. How many young people have not set out in life, with high ideals of making the world a better place for all, only to be distracted along the way? How many young have not become mere consumers, buying all the latest gadgets and fashionable clothes, enjoying all the material pleasures of life and forgetting that their life should really have a higher and nobler purpose? 
 
Many people work hard, get rich, and look back with a sense of pride in what they’ve achieved. It’s human. That pride then drives them to more effort that brings more wealth that brings more pride, and so on. But worldly success is meaningless if one does not aspire to a higher and nobler objective. 
 
 In Sura Al Imran, verse 14, Allah remind us: 
 
 "Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (to return to)." 
 
 Allah wants us to enjoy the fruits of our hard work. He wants us to work hard to enjoy a nice car and a nice home in a nice neighbourhood, but not so much as to distract us from worshipping him. Some religions teach that in order to grow spiritually, you must deny yourself the pleasures of this world. You may have to spend time in a monastery or become an ascetic. Islam is unique among all religions in that it teaches life fulfilment, not life denial. Islam teaches that the worlds of the body and the spirit should live in harmony, not conflict. In our daily prayers, we say: 
 
 Rabbanaa aatina fid dunya hasanatan wafil aakhirati hasanatan wa qinaa athaa ban naar. 
 
 “O my Lord, please grant me the best of this world, and the best of the hereafter, and save me from the torment of the fire.” 
 
 We have to get our work/family/home/community/and leisure balance right. 
 
 Many of our parents came to Britain from other places, to find work and a better life. They have made a kind of Hegira, or Migration, just as Prophet Muhammad sws migrated from Makka to Madina. That first Hegira was for survival, because his life was in danger. We must make sure that our parents’ migration to Britain was not just for a better life for themselves and their children. We must make sure that our presence in this beautiful country will be a benefit to everyone who lives here. Our country has problems of delinquency, failed marriages, drug and alcohol abuse. We can and we should be working to put things right. Even if our parents’ migration was mainly economic, we can extend that purpose to include good citizenship, and being good and inspiring role models of what Islam can offer the modern world. That should be our intention. One hadith, narrated by Sayyidina Omar ibn al Khattab, says:

 "Actions are judged by their intention and everyone shall have only what  he intended. Therefore he who migrated for Allah and His messenger, his migration was for Allah and His messenger; and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration will be judged that for which he intended." 
 
 My dear brothers and sisters, let us dedicate ourselves to the service of Allah. Whether our parents came here to study, to work, to run a business, to seek political asylum, or to enjoy a better life in general, let us make sure that our daily concerns always focus on improving ourselves, our neighbourhood and our environment. This will bring us nearer to Allah. Let us in our spiritual life, make the hejira, the migration, from what pleases us to what pleases Allah. It means, in essence, that we must aim to rise above our selfishness, our vanity and self-indulgence. We must try to fulfil the purpose which Allah decreed for us, which is, to be His Khaleefatullaah,  His ambassadors on earth. 
 
 Innalláha wa malaaikata yusallúna alan nabi. Yá ay yuhal latheena ámanu sallú alayhi wasalli mú tas leema. Allahumma salli alá Muhammad, wa ala áli Muhammad, kama salayta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali Ibrahim. Allahumma barik ala Muhammad, kama barakta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali ibrahim. Fil ála meen, innaka hameedun majeed. 
 
 Sub' hanallahi wal hamdu lillah, wala hawla wala quwwata illah billah yu althi yual theem 
 
 All Glory is for Allah, all Praise is for Allah; There is no power and no strength, except from Allah. 
 
 Dear Brothers and Sisters, 
 
 Let us all try to make our Goals in life, well-balanced and pleasing to Allah swt. Allah told His angels that He created us so that we can be his Ambassadors on earth. Remember you are all Ambassadors of Islam. As young students, your immediate goal is to do well at school so that you can do well in life generally after you leave school. All the time, you are being observed by others, and your behaviour is how people will judge all Muslims and their religion. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s also an opportunity to show how beautiful Islam is. 
 
Here are a few tips to bear in mind: 
 
Islam teaches purity and cleanliness, in body, mind and spirit. Summer is coming, the days are hot. We all perspire, and it can be unpleasant to be near someone whose body or clothes aren’t clean. Make sure you always have a bath or shower every day, and wear clean clothes every day. 
 
Islam teaches excellence. Don’t be satisfied with mediocrity, by just giving your minimum effort and getting average results. Prophet Muhammad sws and his noble Companions, the sahaaba, were not average people. They strived to be excellent human beings. They became role models for people throughout history. They were the best Ambassadors for Islam. We must study their lives for inspiration. We must work hard, and do well. We must try to be the best at what we do, in school subjects, hobbies, or sport. 
 
Choose your friends wisely, Avoid bad company and do not be shy or embarrassed about being ‘different’. Prophet Muhammad said that if you spend 40 days in someone’s company, you become like them. Make sure you spend time with people who are a good influence on you. 
I will end this khutbah with a duah, a plea to Allah: 
 
“O my Lord, do not let our hearts deviate from the Truth now that we have been guided; but grant us Mercy from Your very Presence, for You are the Giver of bounties without measure.” 
 
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobanaa, ba’da ith haday tanaa, wa hablanaa milla dunka Rahma. Innaka antal Wah-haab. 
 
Ameen.

Why Islam and Why are you a Muslim

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem! 
 
O You who believe, – Fear Allah, as He should be feared, and die not except as Muslims. 
Ya Ay-yuhal-latheena ‘aamanut taqul-laaha, wa qooloo qawlan sadeedaa. Yuslih-lakum a’maalakum wayaghfir lakum thunoobakum, wamay yu-til-laaha warasoolah, faqad faaza fawzan atheemaa.” 
 
O You who believe, – Be aware of Allah, and speak a straightforward word. He will forgive your sins and repair your deeds. And whoever takes Allah and His Prophet as a guide, has already achieved a mighty victory. 
 
Dear Brothers and Sisters, 
 
Most of you probably have been asked by someone on this question, “Are you a Muslim?”. And I believe 100%, all of you must be answer it steadily “yes, I am”. But, have you ever been asked by someone else about the following question, “Why are you a Muslim”? Or probably you may ever asked this question to yourself, “Why am I a Muslim?”. In more general question “Why Islam?”. Of course, this will make you stop answering that question immediately and start to think about it. 
 
For most of us, the answer might be “Oh, it’s easy. It’s because I was born and raised in a Muslim family”. But, is this the correct answer? Is this the answer that we really want? So, what happened if we weren’t born in a Muslim family? Are We still be a Muslim or not? Indeed, all of these questions are the questions that I asked myself almost a decade ago. But, as you can see, I am here right now, standing in front of you and I could say with dignity that “I am a Muslim and I am proud of it”. 
 
I am standing in front of you not to lecturing you about Islam and why you should choose Islam. But, at least, I could share my experience in my adventure of finding the answers. Before I proceed, it is better for us to really understand what Islam is about. 
 
The word Islam means voluntary “Submission”, “Surrender”, or “obedience” to the Will of God. It derives from the root word “salam”, meaning peace. Those who try to perform these actions are called”MU-islams” shortly Muslims and equivalently, here we can say it [Islam-ERs] 
 
Islam recognizes that human kind has free choice in whether to obey or disobey God, but ultimately we will be held accountable to God in the next life for the choices that we make in this life. 
 
God sent Prophets to teach mankind how to worship Him; starting with Adam a.s., including Noah a.s.,Abraham a.s., Moses a.s., Jesus or Isa a.s. and the last of the messengers, Muhammad (SAW). The Islamic position is that all of these prophets came with the same message, that there is no deity worthy of worship except the One True God, Allah. 
 
Islam recognizes the close relationship between the body and soul. Whereas the body originates from the earth and has a defined period of life on this earth, the soul originates from God and does not die.Islam encourages the individual to focus on keeping the soul healthy, through the remembrance,obedience and worship of God. Islam teaches that it is through the doing of good deeds and seeking the pleasure of God that souls find true happiness and peace. It is in this context that the word Islam derives from the root word ‘salam’, or peace. 
 
Now, after knowing what Islam is, we can start to answer the question “why Islam”. And the simple answer that came to me is “Islam gives me the purpose of life”. People everywhere are asking the questions; “What is the purpose of life?”, “Why are we here in this world?” and “Where are we going to go after we die?”. You might be amazed to learn, that Islam is providing clear and concise answers for these questions. 
 
Most of those who reflect or think about life in any detail will consider and ponder these questions.There are as many different answers to these questions. Some would hold that the purpose of life was to acquire wealth. But think carefully, suppose the purpose of life is to become wealthy, this means that there would be no purpose after becoming wealthy. 
 
A child of 5 years would obviously prefer a new toy to a deposit slip for a million dollars. A teenager does not consider millions of dollars in the bank as substitute for movies, videos, pizza and hanging out with his friends. A person in their 80s or 90s would never consider holding on to their wealth in place of spending it to hold on to or regain their health. This proves that money is not the main purpose at all for the stages of one’s life.

Meanwhile Islam can provide you the answer. In the Quran Surah Al Qasas 56, Allah defines that the only purpose for which He created mankind is to Worship Him. 
 
To a Muslim the whole purpose of life is “ibadah” or worship to the One True Almighty God on Terms and under His Conditions. The term “worship” to a Muslim includes any and all acts of obedience to Almighty Allah.Islam teaches us that this life is only a test or trial for the individual to show him his true nature. It is only natural that he would accept death as not so much an ending to everything but more as a beginning of the final and lasting life in the Hereafter. 
 
Before entering into either of the final lodging places i.e.; Heaven or Hell, there must be a Day of Judgment or showing of one’s true self to make them aware of their own nature and thereby understand what they have sent on ahead during the life here on the earth. 
 
Every person will be rewarded [or punished] according to their attitude, appreciation, and efforts during this stay on earth. None will be asked about the actions and beliefs of others, nor will anyone be asked regarding that which he was unaware of or incapable of doing. 
 
As the life here is considered as an examination for the individual, the death stage is considered as a resting period after the test. It could be easy for those who were faithful and dedicated or it could be grueling and horrible for the wicked. 
 
Reward and punishment will be in direct proportion to each person and it is only Allah alone who will be the Final Judge over us all. 
 
So, in the teachings of Islam, the line of life and its purpose is logical, clear and simple: 
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>The first life is a test</li>
<li>The life in the grave is a resting or waiting place before the Day of Judgment</li>
<li>The Day of Judgment brings about the clear understanding of what will happen to the individual based on his own desires and actions</li>
<li>The Permanent or Afterlife will either be spend in luxurious splendor or miserable punishment.</li>
</ul>
Following this clear understanding of life, the Muslim’s purpose is clear. First of all, he has no doubt in his mind that: 
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>he is only created by Allah</li>
<li>he is going to spend a period of time in this material world [called “Ad Dunyah”]</li>
<li>he knows he will die</li>
<li>he knows he will spend time in the grave, either pleasant or difficult depending on his own choice of attitude and actions</li>
<li>he knows he will be resurrected for the Day of Judgment</li>
<li>he knows he will be judged according to the most fair of standards by Allah the Almighty, the All</li>
</ul>
For a disbeliever, the purpose of this life is to collect and amass great wealth, money, power and position. Over indulging in eating, drinking, drugs, sex and gambling are a high priority to them. But all of this will not avail them anything good in the grave, on the Day of Judgment or in the Next Life. 
 
Eventually he will be faced with the question: 
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Now what?</li>
<li>What’s Next?</li>
<li>Where am I going?</li>
<li>What will happen to me?</li>
<li>Eventually, he will come to know. For sure, he will come to know. But then what will the knowledge avail him?</li>
</ul>
Look how Islam solves the mystery of the puzzle of life. It provides the answers to the questions and concerns of the human beings on all levels and in every aspect. It is really quite simple. The purpose of life as understood by the Believing Muslim can be simply stated in only two (2) words: Obey God. Our only purpose and salvation lie in these two words.

SECOND KHUTBAH 
 
“Soob’ hanallahi wal hamdu lillah, wala hawla wala quwwata illah billah yu althi yual theem” 
 
Dear Brothers and Sisters, 
 
In Al Quran surah al qasas verse 56 Allah says 
 
We have to bear in our mind that Allah doesn’t need you, Allah doesn’t need me, and Allah doesn’t need any of us. But, we do need Allah. If we decide not to choose Islam, it is not in Allah’s loss, it is our loss instead. Of course, there are thousands, hundred thousands, even million answers to question “Why Islam” and I have found mine. Now, it’s time for you to answer it by yourselves. 
 
There is a beautiful story about hidayah or guidance. It is about the end of life of Abu Talib, the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah and the closest person to him, for he used to protect and help him (SAW) and take his side, and he loved him very much since the messenger of ALLAH 8 years old – that is, naturally (as a blood relative), not in accordance with the Law (as a brother in faith). 
 
So when death approached him, and his time was near, prophet Muhammad (SAW) called him to believe in Allah (SWT) Alone, without partners and to enter into the fold of Islam. But what had been ordained for him overtook him, and he was plucked from his hand, remaining (until the end) one of the disbelievers – and the most complete Wisdom belongs to Allah (SWT). 
 
It is reported on the authority of Sa’eed Ibn Al-Masayyib that he heard from his father that he said:“When death approached Abu Talib, Allah’s Messenger (SAW), Abu Jahl & Abdullah Ibn AbiUmayyah Ibn Al-Mugheerah were with him, and so RasulALLAH (SAW) said: ‘O uncle! Say, La ilahaIllaAllah, a testimony by which I will intercede Allah on your behalf.’ But Abu jahl and Abdullah IbnAbi Umayyah said: ‘O Abu Talib! Will you reject the religion of ‘Abdul Muttalib?’ 
 
Allah’s Messenger (SAW) continued to urge him upon it [to declare that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah (SWT)], while they repeated their question, until his final words, which were that he remained upon the religion of ‘Abdul Muttalib, and he refused to say: La ilaha IllaAllah. And so the Prophet (SAW) was really sad and crying while said: ‘By Allah I will continue to ask for forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.’ 
 
So Allah revealed: “It is not for the Prophet nor those who have believed to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire” (Qur’an At Tawbah 9: 113) 
 
And Allah (SWT) revealed concerning Abu Talib: Verily, [O Muhammad] you guide not whom youlike, but Allah, guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are guided ” (The story was Narrated by Az-Zuhri) 
 
Dear Brothers and Sisters, 
 
Be grateful that you are here right now, be grateful that you are Muslim, be grateful that you have been chosen by ALLAH to get His guidance since it is the highest level of grace that human being could achieve. 
 
‘IBAADALLAH  INNALLAAHA YA-MURUU BIL ‘ADLI WAL IHSAAN WA IITAA-I DZIL QURBAA WA YANHAA ‘ANILFAHSYAA-I WAL MUNKARI WAL BAGHYI YAIZHZHUKUM LA’ALLAKUM TADZAKKARUUN (Sura16:90), 
 
“Surely Allah commands justice, good deeds and generosity to others and to relatives; and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, so that you may be reminded.” 
 
(FADZKURULLAAHA ‘AZHIIMI WA YADZKURKUM FASTAGHFIRULLAAHA YASTAJIBLAKUM WASYKURUUHU ‘ALAA NI’MATIL LATII WA LADZIKRULLAAHU AKBARU WA AQIIMISH SHALAH) 
 
Fadth kuroonee adth kurkum, wash kuroolee walaa tak furoon [2:152]. 
 
“and remember Me: I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not reject faith.” 
 
wala thikrul-Laahi akbar, Wal-Laahu ya’lamu maa tasna’oon.” [29:45]. 
 
“and without doubt, Remembrance of Allah is the Greatest Thing in life, and Allah knows the deeds that you do.” 
 
Aqeemus salaah!

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. 
 
The regulation of man's conduct within one system of life is one of the most important reasons of success and stability. The absence of this regulation is one of the greatest crises a man suffers from in his life. This happens when man is left without guidance from Allah (S.W.T.) or without proper upbringing based on that divine guidance. Under these circumstances, man's life becomes miserable on this earth and he will be amongst the losers in the Hereafter. 
 
The Noble Qur’an teaches us about the nations of people and individuals that were blessed with financial wealth, and physical strength, but they refused to live their lives according to the regulations of Allah (S.W.T.), so He destroyed them and their wealth. This happened in the past it is happening now, and sure it will happen in the future until the Day of Judgment. 
 
From the mercy of Allah (S.W.T.) is that He did not leave man without a system to regulate his conduct and behavior. So, He (S.W.T.) sent legislation to make man's life the best on this earth so that he will be happy in this life and in the Hereafter. Allah (S.W.T.) says about Qur'an in surat At-Takwir, (verse 27&28), which is translated as, "Verily, this (the Qur'an) is no less than a reminder to (all) the Alamin (mankind and jinn), to whomsoever among you wills to walk straight." 
 
Allah (S.W.T.) ordered His prophet (S.A.W.) and the believers to be disciplined based on Islam and taught them not to transgress: Allah (S.W.T) says in surat Huod, (verse 112), which is translated as, "So stand (O Muhammad) firm and straight (on Islam) as you are commanded and those who are with you (your companions) and do not transgress…" Ibn Abbas (R.A.) said: "There was no verse in the Qur'an harder on the prophet (S.A.W.) than this verse." For this reason, when the companions of the prophet (S.A.W.) said: "Your hair is getting gray early", he replied: " Surat Hood and its sisters made my hair gray.” 
 
Allah (S.W.T.) ordered His prophet (S.A.W.) in another verse in surat Ash-Shuora, (verse 15), which is translated as, "So unto this (Islam) alone then invite (people) (O Muhammad) and stand firm and straight (on Islam) as you are commanded…" 
 
Imam Muslim reported that a man said O Messenger of Allah; tell me something of Islam, which I will not ask anyone else about it. He (S.A.W.) said: "Say, I believe in Allah and then be steadfast.” Imam An-Nawawi said: "This hadith is one of the great ones that Islam is based on." To be steadfast is to abide by Islam and it is a high degree that shows complete belief and great strength. Omar (R.A.) said: "Steadfast is enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil and not deceit like the deceit of the fox." This means discipline according to the Islamic system. 
 
Islam teaches us how to regulate our behavior and conduct in all aspects of the Deen; in the Aqeedah, in the Ibadat, in human relations, and in the rules of Halal and Haram. 
 
In the Aqeedah, We must believe what Allah (S.W.T.) requires us to believe without additions, deletions, or changes. 
 
In the Ibadat, Islam teaches us how to perform Ibadat. Islam did not leave the Ibadat to be performed according to someone's whims and desires. The person cannot worship Allah (S.W.T.) in whichever way he chooses, nor can he worship Allah (S.W.T.) whenever he wants. This is the best discipline. The prophet (S.A.W.) says: "Pray as you see me pray." He also said: "Take from me your rituals of Hajj.” Islam also clarified to us the rules of Zakah and fasting. 
 
If we take, as an example, Salah, which is a frequent Ibadah one that is performed 5 times a day, we will find it to be a set of specific acts that were handed down to us from the prophet (S.A.W.). So, it is not allowed for anyone to add to it, or delete from it. This teaches us to discipline our life because Ibadat is to follow and not to invent. 
 
If we look into the prayer of Jama'ah (prayer in congregation) and its rules, we will find a great lesson of discipline. The Imam stands in front of the people, lines the people in straight rows. If he says Allah Akbar, they say Allah Akbar, and if he says Ameen, they say Ameen. If he bows down, they bow down. If he prostrates, they prostrate. If he stands up, they stand up. If he says Assalamu Alaikum, they say Assalamu Alaikum.

There are many authentic Ahadiths that order the Muslims to follow the Imam and order them not to differ with him during the prayers and not to perform any act of the prayer before he does. All this shows that Islam teaches us discipline and regulates our conduct, actions and behavior. This is one of many benefits we derive especially from the prayers. However, it does not end there, discipline involves all acts and worship. 
 
Islam also taught us to be precise with the time of all Ibadat. Allah (S.W.T.) did not order us to perform prayer only, but He (S.W.T.) ordered us to perform it at specific times in surat An-Nisa', (verse 103), which is translated as, "…Perform As-Salat. Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed times." Jibreel clarified to the prophet (S.A.W.) the beginning time and the ending time of every prayer. If someone wanted to pray prayer only minutes before it is due, it will not be accepted. This is a great lesson. It occurs five times a day and teaches us discipline. 
 
The same thing applies to fasting. Allah (S.W.T.) ordered us to fast the month of Ramadan. The prophet (S.A.W.) told us how to begin fasting the month of Ramadan and how to end it. He also forbade us to start fasting the month of Ramadan before it is due and forbade us to fast the day of Eid. He specified to us that fasting is from dawn to sunset. The prophet (S.A.W.) commanded us to delay Souhoor (special meal before dawn) till sometime before dawn, and commanded us to break fast immediately after sunset. All of this injunctions aid to the disciplining process. 
 
The same thing applies to Zakah. If it is the Sadaqatal fitr (break fast charity), the prophet (S.A.W.) specified the time when it should be given away, and that it must be paid before the prayer of Eid. He also specified all the kinds of things from which we can give Sadaqatal fitr. If it is the Zakah of Money, he (S.A.W.) specified to us that it be once a year upon the rich. He also specified to us the amounts of Zakah prescribed for gold, silver, farm, animals and all kinds of monetary possessions. Islam specified to us whom Zakah should be given to. So, none of us can spend it as he wishes. This teaches us discipline. 
 
As to the Udhiah (sacrificing animal), Islam specified its rules to us all. It is to be done after the Eid Salah, and if it is done before the Salah, it will not be accepted. This teaches us discipline. 
 
As to Hajj, it is an obligation that cannot be performed except within a certain period of time and in a specific place. If someone wanted to perform Hajj when it is not due or in a different place, it will not be accepted. This teaches us discipline. 
 
These examples show that Islam teaches us to discipline ourselves and to regulate our actions, sayings, conduct and behavior so that we become disciplined individuals, families, and societies within the system of Islam. 
 
Islam also taught us to abide by all its rules concerning human relations, and business transactions. Some of them are not allowed. They have conditions that must be met before they become valid. The same applies to the rest of the rules of Halal and Haram. This teaches us discipline. 
 
Islam also taught us to discipline ourselves through its political system that is followed by the Islamic state, starting from electing the ruler, his conditions, qualifications, responsibilities, to appointing governors, judges to their positions, responsibilities and how to terminate them and so on. All this teaches us discipline. 
 
Islam is the Deen of Allah (S.W.T.) and it is a complete way of life to all humanity. Whoever believes in it and acts accordingly will be raised to discipline his life and regulate his actions and stay away from chaos. 
 
So, it is a must on all of us, (old, young, parents, children, male, and female) to be disciplined and our conduct is to be regulated and also to call others to do the same.

The Relationship Between Muslims and Non-Muslims

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. 
 
Today, our topic is about one of the most important Islamic topics because it answers many questions we often raise. This is a practical topic because we interact with Non-Muslims on a daily basis. We should understand the nature of the Muslim/Non-Muslim relationship, and its goals and guidelines. 
 
We touched upon this topic many times in the past. But today, we will talk about it again because of its importance. When we understand it clearly, it will affect our behavior and presence in this country, and it will guide our relationship with Non-Muslims. 
 
We must first ask ourselves, what is the Islamic goal behind our relationship with Non-Muslims? 
 
It is, “To convey the message of Islam to all people, to deliver it freely, to insure the freedom of religious beliefs, and to establish justice on earth within the system of Islam.” 
 
This goal is a divine obligation prescribed by Allah (S.W.T) upon us. He (S.W.T.) holds this Ummah responsible and accountable for establishing these goals. Allah (S.W.T) said in surat Al-Baqarah, what can be translated as, "Thus We have made you (Muslims), a just (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind, and the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you…”(Verse 143) 
 
Allah (S.W.T.) also honored this Ummah when He made it the best Ummah to rise to perform this obligation. Allah (S.W.T) said in surat Al-Imran, what can be translated as, "You (Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind, you enjoining what is good (Al-Ma'roof) and forbidding what is evil (Al-Munkar), and you believe in Allah…”(Verse 110) 
 
Each relationship with Non-Muslims, whether they are on the personal or state level, should be to achieve this goal. Islam orders us to strengthen this relationship with Non-Muslims and to eliminate anything that will weaken or make it harder to achieve this goal. 
 
The life of the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the lives of his companions are full of great examples that promote good relationships with Non-Muslims. Islamic history is full of evidence that shows that Muslims have maintained good relations with Non-Muslims for many centuries. Because these Muslims dealt with others in good manners, they were able to conquer nations and lands. Muslims did not overcome these nations with the strength of weapons and large armies. Some lands were conquered without a single soldier—in fact, they were conquered by Muslim merchants who carried goods and good manners. These manners opened the minds and hearts of the people who came into Islam by the masses. Because of the good manners of these merchants, today we witness the largest Muslim populations in Indonesia and Malaysia. 
 
Peace, tolerance, compassion, and good relationships are the normal, and original state between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Islam promotes and protects this good relationship. Animosity and war are exceptions to this original state, when these exceptions do not exist, then we should return to the original peaceful state. 
 
Allah (S.W.T) said in surat Al-Mumtahinah, what can be translated as, "Allah does not forbid you (Muslims) to deal justly and kindly with those who have not fought against you in accounts of your religion and who do not drive you out from your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.” (Verse 8) 
 
This great verse clearly states the normal and original state for a good relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Allah (S.W.T.) did not prevent us (Muslims) from establishing good relationships with Non-Muslims. He clearly says that our relationships with Non-Muslims should be based on the best morals and justice with those who declared peace upon us and did not fight us. 
 
The Noble Quran uses the word, “Bir,” which is typically used to describe the highest relationship one could have with parents. The Quran also uses “Bir” to describe the type of relationship we should have with Non-Muslims. “Bir” includes all the good things that a relationship should have, and excludes all the bad aspects of a relationship. For that reason, Muslim scholars said that “Bir” is the foundation of the relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. 
 
This verse was revealed after the story of Asma’ and her mother. Imams Bukhari, Muslim and Ahmad reported that Asma’ the daughter of Abu Bakr (R.A.) said: “My mother came to me while she was still a polytheist, so I asked Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W.), “My mother, who is ill-disposed to Islam, has come to visit me. She wants something from me. Shall I maintain relations with her?” He (S.A.W.) replied, “Yes, maintain relations with your mother.” 
 
After Imam At-Tabari mentioned various opinions for the explanations of this verse, his final conclusion was that: “The most correct opinion in understanding this verse is that Muslims should be just, fair, and have the best relationship with all Non-Muslims who ‘do not fight against us on account of our religion and do not drive us out of our homes.’ This includes people of all faiths and sects and the support of this correct opinion came from the story of Asma’ with her mother.” 
 
Sayyid Qutb also attempts to explain this verse, saying that: 
 
“Islam is a Deen of peace and a conviction of love. It is a system that has compassion to all people. It gathers all people (Muslim and Non-Muslim) under the banner of Allah like brethren in accord and love. There is no obstacle that prevents this from happening except an aggression from its enemies against it and its people. If those enemies show peace, Islam does not want animosity or to start it. Even when the enemies still show animosity, Islam always looks for ways to bring the relationship to normalcy through great conduct and justice.” 
 
He continues: “Islam allows Muslims to seek accord and love with Non-Muslims who did not fight them for their religion and expel them from their lands.” 
 
He continues: “Islam makes peace as the normal relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. This relationship is not distracted except with an aggression that must be dealt with, a breaching of truce, an obstacle in the face of delivering the message of Islam, shackling the freedom of religion. Other than that, the relationship is a relationship of peace, love, justice for all people.” {In the Shade of Al-Qur’an, 6:3544.} 
 
From all that we have just heard, we should understand that the normal relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims should be based on the best morality and justice, except with the exceptions mentioned. If we fail to establish this relationship, then we are committing aggression and injustice, and Allah (S.W.T.) does not love transgressors and unjust people. 
 
There are many things that we can do to establish tolerance, compassion, and justice in relationships with Non-Muslims. Some of these things are:

<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Greeting, handshaking, hugging, and exchanging visits with them in their homes and places of worship. Also, welcoming them in our homes and our mosques.</li>
<li>Accepting their invitation, offering them a meal.</li>
<li>Offering congratulations in happy occasions like weddings, having a newborn, and etc…</li>
<li>Exchanging gifts with them, but not giving them gifts during their holidays.</li>
<li>Tashmeetu Al-Ates: If a non-Muslim sneezes and says, “Allah be praised” Then we should say, “May Allah guide you and make you in a good condition.”</li>
<li>Visiting their sick people, and asking Allah (S.W.T.) for their recovery and their guidance.</li>
<li>Offering condolences when they are struck by any disaster, tragedy, or death. But, do not ask for Allah’s mercy on their death.</li>
<li>Collaborating with them in all good things.</li>
</ul>
We must also pay attention to the following when we deal with Non-Muslims: 
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>We must not be pleased with their disbelief.</li>
<li>We must not give them support against a Muslim when that is done unjustly.</li>
<li>We must not imitate them in their rituals, or in what is considered specifically from their own characteristics like clothing, hairdos, etc…</li>
<li>We must not congratulate them on their holidays or their rituals with any statements that may give acceptance to their practices. Other statements are permissible.</li>
<li>We must not participate or give them gifts on their holidays.</li>
<li>We must not attend any event where there is blasphemy against Allah (S.W.T.) and His verses.</li>
</ul>
Lastly, bear in mind that everything I mentioned here is based on evidence from the Qur’an or the Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). If we keep these things in mind in our relations with Non-Muslims then we reflect a brighter picture of Islam and Muslims. This is the key to giving successful dawah.

Belief in Qadar (predestination)

Belief in predestination (qadar) is one of the basic principles of faith; without it a person’s belief is incomplete. ‘Umar (R.A.), described how angel Jibreel (Gabriel), questioned the Messenger (S.A.W.) about imaan (belief), the messenger replied: “It (imaan) is to believe in Allaah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and to believe in divine destiny (qadar), both good and evil thereof.” He (i.e., Jibreel) replied: “You have spoken rightly.” [Reported by Imaam Muslim] 
 
There are many texts, which speak of the qadar of Allaah or command belief in qadar. These texts include the aayaat (verses): 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “Verily, We have created all things with qadar (Divine Preordainments of all things before their creation as written in the Book of Decrees-Al-Lawh al-Mahfoodh).” [surat Al-Qamar, (Verse 49)] 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “…And the command of Allaah is a decree determined.” [surat Al-Ahzaab, (Verse 38)] 
 
Taawoos said: “I met some people from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah who said that everything happens by qadar. He said, I heard ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar say: everything happens by qadar, even helplessness and resourcefulness.” [Reported by Imaam Muslim] 
 
Imaam An-Nawawi said: “Clear cut evidence from the Qur’aan and Sunnah, the consensus (ijmaa’) of the Sahaabah (the Companions) and the prominent figures of the earlier and later generations, overwhelmingly support one another to prove the qadar of Allaah.” 
 
Belief in qadar (predestination) is one of the basic principles of faith. The Qur’aan and Sunnah explain the concept of qadar (predestination), and the Messenger (S.A.W.) stated that taking action and using any means to reach an objective is part of qadar and does not contradict this idea. He warned his Ummah against those who do not believe in qadar, or who use qadar as an excuse to oppose the commandments of Islaam. 
 
The Messenger (S.A.W.) became very angry when he came out one day and found his companions debating about qadar; he was so angry that his face turned red as if pomegranate had been squeezed over his face. He said: “Is this what you have been commanded to do? Is this why I was sent to you? The people who came before you were destroyed when they disputed about this matter. I urge you not to dispute about this.” [An authentic narration reported by Imaam At-Tirmidhi] 
 
The companions (R.A.) responded to the urgency and directions of their prophet. It is not known whether any of them debated about qadar (predestination), either during his lifetime or after he died. 
 
It has not been narrated whether any of the Muslims debated about qadar during the time of the Rightly Guided Khulafa (caliphs) (R.A.). All that has been narrated is that Abu ‘Ubaydah objected to the fact that ‘Umar went back with the people and did not enter Syria when the plague spread there. He said to ‘Umar: “O Ameer al’ Mu’mineen, are you running away from the decree (qadar) of Allaah? ‘Umar said, “If only someone other than you had said this, O Abu ‘Ubaydah! Yes, we are running away from the decree of Allaah towards the decree of Allaah. Do you not see that if you had a camel and you came to a valley where there were two patches of land, one green and fertile, and the other dry and barren, if you let it graze in the green land, you do so by the decree of Allaah, and if you let it graze in the dry land, you do so by the decree of Allaah." [Reported by Imaam Bukhaari] This is how Umar directed Abu 'Ubaida to the correct meaning of qadar (predestination).

The pillars of belief in qadar (predestination) 
 
Belief in qadar is based on four pillars. Whoever affirms all of them has attained perfect belief in qadar. Whoever is lacking one or more of them does not have the correct belief in qadar. These four pillars are: 
 
The first pillar: Belief in the all-encompassing knowledge of Allaah. 
 
This great principle is frequently reiterated in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (S.A.W.). The knowledge of Allaah encompasses all things: He knows what was and what is yet to come. In regards to that which does not happen, if it were to happen, He knows how it would be. He knows what exists and what does not exist, what is possible and what is impossible. 
 
Allaah, the Almighty, knows about His slaves, how long their lives will be, what their provisions will be, their circumstances, their movements, whether they are doomed or blessed. He knows who among them is from the people of paradise and who is from the people of Hell, even before He created them or the heavens and earth. 
 
All of this is connected to His all-encompassing knowledge and to the fact that He is All-Knowing, All-Aware, All-Hearing, and All-Seeing. 
 
The second pillar: Belief that Allaah has written everything in Al-lawh al-Mahfoodh (The Preserved Tablet): 
 
The text of the Qur’aan and Sunnah indicate that Allaah had written all things in Al-Lawh al-mahfoodh (the preserved tablet). According to a hadeeth ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-Aas said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.) say: “Allaah wrote the decrees of His creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He said: His throne is above the water.” [Reported by Imaam Muslim] 
 
And in anther narration, the prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Allaah decreed the decrees fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.” [Reported by Imaam At-Tirmidhi] 
 
The messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.) said: “The first thing which Allaah created was the Pen. Allaah said, ‘Write! The pen asked, 'What shall I write? He (Allaah) said: “Write the decree (al-qadar) of what has happened and what is to happen, for all eternity.” [Reported by Imaam At-Tirmidhi] 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “Know you not that Allaah knows all that is in the heaven and on the earth? Verily, it is [all] in the Book [Al-Kitaab] [Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh]. Verily, that is easy for Allaah.” [surat Al-Hajj, (Verse 70)] 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “Verily, We give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before [them], and their traces and all things We have recorded with number (as a record) in a Clear Book (kitaab mubeen).” [surat Yaaseen, (Verse 12)] 
 
The third pillar: Belief that the will of Allaah is All-Encompassing and that His power is overwhelming: 
 
This principle implies the belief that the will of Allaah is unstoppable and that His power is All-Encompassing. Whatever Allaah, the All-High, wills happens and whatever he does not will does not happen. Nothing can move or come to a halt in the heavens or on earth except by His Will, and nothing happens in His Dominion except what He wills. 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, “Be! And it is!”" [surat Yaaseen, (Verse 82)] 
 
The fourth pillar of Qadar: Belief that Allaah is the Creator of all things: 
 
The texts (of the Qur’aan and Sunnah) state that Allaah, the All-Powerful, is the Creator of all things. He is the One who created, formed and brought His creation into being. He is the Creator and everything besides Him is subject to His dominion and control and is created by Him. Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “Allah is the Creator of all things.” [surat Az-Zumar, (Verse 62)] 
 
People's deeds are created by Allaah and decreed by Him (S.W.T.): 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “While Allaah has created you and what you make!” [surat As-Saaffaat, (Verse 96)] This belief does not contradict with the actions that humans take, because humans do not know what Allaah has decreed for them. The believer should always use all lawful and available means to reach a lawful objective; whatever results occur have been decreed by Allaah. 
 
A man once asked, ‘O messenger of Allaah, explain our religion to us as if we had only just been created. What should we strive for today? Is it for something concerning which the pens have dried and the decree has been issued, or is it concerning something that is yet to be decided? He (S.A.W.) said, “No, it is for something concerning which the pens have dried and the decree has been issued.’ He said, “Then why should we strive? He said: ‘Strive, for each person will be facilitated to his fate.” [Reported by Imaam Muslim] According to another narration, “Strive, for each person will be facilitated to do his deeds.” Then he said: “Strive, for everyone will be guided, those who are blessed will be guided to do the actions of those who are blessed, and those who are doomed will be facilitated to do the actions of those who are doomed.” Then he (S.A.W.) recited from what may be translated as, “By the night as it envelops. By the day as it appears in brightness. By Him who created male and female. Certainly, your efforts and deeds are divers [different in aims and purposes]; as for him who gives [in charity] and keeps his duty to Allaah and fears him, and believes in Al-Husnaa [the best] We will make smooth for him the path of ease [goodness]. But he who is greedy, miserly and thinks himself self-sufficient, and belies Al-Husnaa, We will make smooth for him the path of evil.” [surat Al-Layl, (Verses 1 to 10)] [Reported by Imaams Bukhaari and Muslim] 
 
The messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.) said: “By the one besides whom there is no other god, one of you may do the deeds of the people of paradise until there is no more than a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him and he does an action of the people of Hell, and thus he enters it (hell). And one of you may do the deeds of the people of Hell until there is no more than a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him and he does an action of the people of paradise, and thus he enters (paradise).” [Reported by Imaams Bukhaari and Muslim]

Some claim that believing in qadar implies that one does not need to act or seek the means to an end. 
 
Those who made this claim are wrong because believing in does not mean that a person should not strive. They did not recognize the reality of qadar, for Allaah decreed the outcomes and the means; He did not decree the effects without causes. Whoever claims this is fabricating a serious lie about Allaah. 
 
When Allaah decrees that so and so should be given a provision, He also creates the means by which he will earn that provision. Whoever claims that there is no need to strive because whatever provisions have been decreed will come whether one strives or not does not understand the decrees of Allaah concerning His slaves. Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “And in the heaven is your provision, and that which you are promised." [surat Az-Zaaryaat, (verse 22)] Also He (S.W.T) commanded us what may be translated as, “He it is who has made the earth subservient to you [i.e. easy for you to walk, to live and to do agriculture on it]; so walk in the path thereof and eat of His provision...” [surat Al-Mulk, (Verse 15)] 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “…And there is no victory except by the help of Allaah." [surat Al-Anfaal, (Verse 10)] Also He (S.W.T) commanded us what may be translated as, “And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war [tanks, planes, missiles, artillery] to threaten the enemy of Allaah and your enemy.” [surat Al-Anfaal, (Verse 60)] 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) is the one who decrees the illness and also the cure; He orders us to use medications so that we may be cured. The prophet was once asked, "Should we use medication, 'O messenger of Allaah? He replied, "Yes, use medication, O' servant of Allaah, surely Allaah did not send down a disease without sending down a cure for it; some people knew the cure and others did not." 
 
If one studies the life of the messenger (S.A.W.) one will realize that the prophet with his complete faith in fate never avoided the means or necessary steps to reach an objective. 
 
The Different Types of Qadar 
 
When we look at various verses from the Qur'aan and authentic ahaadeeth of the prophet, we will find that there are two types of qadar. The first type of qadar is called, 'definite qadar,' which Allaah has written in the Mother of the Book, (al Lawh al-Mahfoodh) and this decree will never change. The second type of qadar, 'indefinite qadar,' Allaah has made His decree, and made His angels aware of it. This type of qadar may change if Allaah wills. Allaah (S.W.T.) says what may be translated as, "Allaah blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfoodh) [Surat Al Ra'id, (Verse 39)]. 
 
Some may ask if a person's provisions and lifespan has already been decided and will not increase or decrease, then how can we interpret the following hadeeth of the prophet, where he states: "Whoever would like his provision to be increased and his life to be prolonged let him uphold the ties of kinship." [Reported by Imaams Bukhaari and Muslim] 
 
Also, how can we interpret the hadeeth which states that Allaah made the lifespan of Dawood one hundred years, when it had originally decreed for him to live for sixty years? In part of a longer hadeeth, the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said, "…Adam asked Allaah about the age of David and Allaah answered that his age was 60 years. Adam replied, "O' my Lord, increase his age from my age by 40 years." Later, when Adam lifespan came to an end, the angel of death came [to take Adam's soul] and Adam said, "Isn't there 40 years left of my life?" The angel answered, "Did you not give it to your son David?" So the prophet commented that Adam had denied and therefore his offspring will deny in the same way." [An authentic hadeeth reported by Imaams At-Tirmidhi and Al-Haakem] 
 
In response to these inquiries, Imaam Ibn Taymiyyah said: There are two types of provision and lifespan: the first type has already been decreed and is written in Umm al-kitaab, and cannot be changed or altered. The next type of qadar, Allaah has informed His angels of His decrees. This is the type where provisions and lifespan may increase or decrease. Hence Allaah, the Almighty says what may be translated as, "Allaah blots out what he wills and confirms [what He wills]. And with Him is the Mother of the book." [Surat Ar-Ra'ad, (Verse39)] The mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitaab) is Al-Lawh al-Mahfoodh, in which Allaah has decreed all things as they will always be without change. However, the decrees contained in the books of the angels, such as lifespan and provisions, may increase or decrease according to various circumstances, thereafter, the angels will re-write a person's provision and lifespan. If a person, upholds the ties of kinship, his provisions and lifespan will be extended, otherwise they will decrease."[See Majmoo'al-Fataawa 8/540] 
 
In the same source, Imaam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Life spans are also of two types: the definite lifespan which is known to Allaah, and the variable indefinite lifespan. Allaah commands the angels to write down the lifespan of His slave. If the person upholds the ties of kinship, He commands the angels to increase his lifespan and provision. The angels only know the original lifespan of humans; however, if Allaah extends a person's life, the angels are unaware of any changes until Allaah informs them. When the appointed time for death comes, nothing can accelerate or delay it; only Allaah knows how matters will proceed during this time. [See Majmoo'al-Fataawa 8/517] 
 
Imaam Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalaani said: "What is known to Allaah from qadar cannot be changed or altered. However, the deeds or actions of a person do change and can be observed. What also changes is the knowledge of the angels who have been entrusted to care for human beings. This is what may be blotted out or confirmed, such as extending people's lifespan and provision. But whatever was previously known by Allaah cannot be blotted out or confirmed, and that knowledge rests with Allaah."[See Fath al-Baari, 11/488] 
 
How should we deal with these two types of Qadar? 
 
Once we believe in both types of qadar, then we should deal with both types as if they were indefinite, because our fates are unknown to us. For those who believe in qadar, they must work to the best of their capabilities to do good and avoid evil when it comes to religious or worldly matters. We should utilize all lawful and available resources to achieve the greatest good. Surely, Allaah (S.W.T) will guide us towards the fate that He has decreed for us. 
 
Two groups that were misguided about Qadar 
 
The first group was called Al-Qadariyyah because they believed that the individual has the power to initiate his own actions independently of Allaah, and they denied that things happen by the decree and will of Allaah. 
 
Imaam Muslim reported that "The first person who spoke about qadar in Basrah was Ma'bad and those who were with him claimed that there was no qadar, and that everything happened without being decreed." 
 
A few companions of the prophet were still alive at this time and launched a series of debates against this group. This opinion of the Qadarriyah's was adopted by the leaders of the Mu'tazilah such as Ma'bad, Waasil ibn Ataa, Amr ibn Ubayd and Gheelaan al-Dimashqi. 
 
The other misguided group, Al-Jabriyyah, claimed that the individual has been forced to do whatever he does without the freedom of choice, and what little power an individual does have is very ineffective. At the end of the Umayyad period, the first person to make such a claim was Al-Jahm ibn Safwaan; from his false claims stemmed widespread misguidance. 
 
This belief spread throughout the Ummah and was adopted by many worshippers, ascetics and Sufis. And some of them have gone to the extreme of permitting things which are forbidden or making obligatory actions no longer compulsory.

The Benefits of believing in Qadar (Predestination): 
 
1- Helps believers adhere to the true path during times of ease or difficulty. 
 
Belief in qadar makes a person continue to follow the straight path, so that he is not careless at times of ease or in despair when calamity strikes, for he knows that everything good that happens to him comes from Allaah, and is not because of his intelligence or good planning: Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allaah.” [surat An-Nahl, (Verse 53)] 
 
If a person truly believes in qadar, then no matter what trials and tribulations befall him, he always knows that this is happening by the decree of Allaah, as a test from Him, so he does not panic nor despair, rather he seeks the reward of Allaah and bears it with patience, and this faith brings contentment and tranquility to the heart of the believer. 
 
Allaah (S.W.T) says what may be translated as, “No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees [Al-lawh al-Mahfoodh] before we bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allaah. In order that you may not grieve at the things over that you fail to get, nor rejoice over that which has been given to you.” [surat Al-Hadeed, (Verses 21 & 22)] 
 
The prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said," How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this is not the case with any one except a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allaah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him." [Reported by Imaam Muslim] 
 
2- Another benefit of believing in qadar is that it makes a person very careful. 
 
Peoples' hearts are always changing; this is because our hearts are between two of the fingers of Ar-Rahmaan (Allaah, the All Merciful). He is the One who turns them over as He wills; He is the one who sends down the trials that cause the heart to constantly change. Those who believe in qadar are always careful about bad things that may lure their hearts astray; also, this believer will be careful that his final actions or conditions may lead him to the hellfire. When a believer is careful, he will never be lazy or apathetic; instead, he will be motivated to follow the straight path, to do righteous deeds and to avoid sins. 
 
At the same time, this believer’s heart is always attached to its Creator, calling upon Him, putting its hope in Him, seeking His help and asking Him to make it adhere firmly to the straight path, and to be guided righteously. 
 
3- Another benefit for those who believe in qadar is that they will face difficulties and dangers with a strong heart. 
 
When a person believes that everything that all his provisions, his life, and everything that happens to him are in the hand of Allaah, then he can confront difficulties and ordeals with a strong heart. 
 
The messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.) said: “…And remember that if all the people desire to benefit you united, they will be unable to benefit you except that which Allaah had preordained (for you); and if all of them intend to do harm to you, they will not be able to afflict you except that which Allaah had preordained against you. The pens have been lifted up aside and the ink of the book (of predestination) has dried up.” [Reported by Imaam At-Tirmidhi] 
 
I ask Allaah (S.W.T.) to make us among those people who complete their faith by believing in His qadar and from the people who will benefit from this belief in this life as well as in the hereafter. "Aameen"

Duah: Supplication to Allah (Du’a translated it means literally ‘calling’)

AS-SALAAMU ALAIKUM, WA REHMATUL LAAHI WA BARAKAATUH, 
 
All praise is due to Alláh, the Lord of all the Worlds; may the greetings and peace be upon the best messenger, Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and upon his family and upon all of his companions. 
 
Praise is due to Allah who guided us to the righteous path, and indeed we wouldn’t have attained this state of guidance without Him Allah, 
 
Brothers/Sisters in Islam, Learned Colleagues and Scholars, 
 
The topic of our khutba today is Du’a in so far as people have generally forgotten the power of Du’a translated it means literally ‘calling’. Because, in this technology driven world, people have become too arrogant. They believe that, somehow, they have become masters over their own destinies. So today’s Khutba will concentrate on nothing but the concept of Dua. 
 
This is despite the fact that Dua is the most beneficial type of medicine for healing. It is therefore enemy of illness and affliction and despite the fact that SAW has said, “Dua is the weapon of the believer, the pillar of the deen, and the light of the heaven and earth.” 
There’s a saying that you’ll never find a disbeliever on a sinking ship. This is exactly the same message we find in the Qur’an; when man realises his weakness in the face of a mighty storm, then he knows only ALLAH (AZZA WAJAL) can save him. 
 
Surah Luqman (31): 31 – 33 
“Seest thou not that The ship sail through The Ocean by the grace Of Allah ? – 
“and when any wave befalls them like mountains, They call to Allah, Offering Him sincere devotion, But when He has delivered them Safely to land, there are Among them those that hover Between (right and wrong, keeping to the middle course. )”. 
 
The thing to bear in mind here is that from the Tafsir point of view every Ayaat in the Holy Quran has many meanings and moreover for all times, past present and the future. This whole ayat applies to all of us in this room. Because it goes on to say, “In it are signs for every patient grateful. 
 
Look I’ll prove it. Don’t look at the literal words Ship sailing through. This could be interpreted as the Ship being you my brother, not thanking Allah when all is well and you are sailing through the ocean, the ocean being life in general. Lets look at the second portion of the Ayat, which says that when a wave covers them, They call to Allah, Offering Him sincere devotion, Life is often full of pain and tribulations. A child begins by calling on its Mother, who is often quick to respond. But later on in life, there are times when parents or friends are not there and who do you call on then ? That is the time that a person faces up to his weakness and unfortunately, that is the time when most of us remembers ASWT. “But” the Ayat goes on the say “when He has delivered them Safely to land, there are Among them those that hover Between (right and wrong). 
 
When things are going well, most of us don’t thank ASWT even a small tiny example from our daily lives, the fact that we all had a good meal last night but did we thank Allah, for the inestimate or inestimable pleasures that is on our dinner table daily. You can’t blame the Nassaara or the atheist neighbours who live next to you because they don’t even know whom to thank. But you my dear brothers in this room, exactly how many of you say the Dua either before or after the meal. 
 
So why has there been a despondency amongst many brothers because I have actually heard my own son say, “well the response to my Du’a seemed to be delayed”. 
 
Perhaps you are not aware of the consequences that would result if Allah granted your wish and you attained what you desired, because what you seek might be to your detriment. In this state you are like a child with fever asking for an ice cream. Such is the wisdom of ASWT. We think short term whereas Allah’s thinking is long term and for your own good. 
 
One must become abd meaning a slave of Allah and show utter humility, when making Dua. Allah (azza wajal) mentions repeatedly that you should work for His pleasure. But we do the opposite. The idea is to please ASWT and not yourself. If the Du’a has been slow it is because of our constant wrong doings and wrong actions. If, however, you open the door by developing Taqwa for Allah then the response (to your Du’a) would arrive quicker. 
 
“0 Rooh, be conscious that your Master is more aware about your well-being than you are says Allah azza wajal. And it maybe you will dislike something that is good for You” 
 
Dua is also a cure for illness: 
 
From the hadith of H. Aishah (RA) SAW said that, 
“Dua benefits those things that have occurred and have not yet occurred. For indeed while the tribulation is descending the Dua meets it and they remain struggling with one another until the Day of Judgement.” 
 
Now what are the Merits of making Dua: 
 
Allah says in the Qur’an: Surah Al-Baqarah Chapter 2: Ayat 186 
 
“When my servants Ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed Close to them: I listen To the Dua of every Dua maker when he calls on Me: 
 
The place of Dua is so high to ASWT, that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has said 
 
“There is nothing more noble in the sight of Allah than Du’a.” [4] 
 
In fact, Allah remembers more those who worship Him than they remember Him. Under the verse Surah Ankaboot: 45 
 
“And Allah’s remembrance is the greatest…” 
 
In Islam, Du’a is considered to be the best act of Ibadah. It is a direct link between man and his Lord (Allah). This can be confirmed by another hadith: That : “The most excellent type of ibadah or worship is Dua.” 
 
The Prophet SAW also said: 
 
“Ask Allah for everything, even the lace of your shoes. 
 
So make Du’a for everything you want, no matter how big or small. 
 
And let no one say: “… my Lord won’t answer my Dua prayer, because of this and that.. or because of so and so..”. No! Indeed Allah is the Most Generous King. Is there anyone who met a king, and praised and glorified him, and then asked, yet the request was not granted? So what about Allah, the King of the Heavens and the Earth -Indeed, our beloved Prophet SAW had said: ” your Lord is so Generous, and when His servant raises his hands to Him in Dua, He is, shy from returning them empty. ‘Indeed, Allah is Shy and Beneficent. He is Shy when His servant raises his hands to Him (in a Du’a) to return them empty, disappointed! ‘ By the way you can find this Hadith in Ahmad, Abu Dawud #1488, at-Tirmidhi #3556, ibn Majah #3865 and others. 
 
Dua is the weapon of a believer. It will protect you from the evils of enemies. Du’a is the shield of a believer. It will increase your sustenance. Du’a is more forceful than a sword. Du’a replaces what has been destined and also creates that what has not been destined. Du’a is a form of ibaadat. Du’a removes both the present suffering and that which will come down later. Du’a and sufferings challenge each other until the Day of Judgment, and Du’a comes out victorious. 
Whoever knocks on a door persistently will be allowed in. If you keep on knocking the door of Divine Mercy, sooner or later it will be opened for you. 
 
Never get tired of Du’a, for Allah Ta’ala has attached much value to it. Allah Ta’ala says “Let My servants know that I have the power to grant My servant’s wishes.” 
If Allah grants someone a chance of making Du’a, He will not deprive him of answer. A believer’s Du’a will increase his good deeds and reward him in the Hereafter as his other good deeds are rewarded. Praise Allah Almighty. Remember Him and thank Him for His blessings. Send Salaat upon the Prophet (SAW). Seek Tauba. Attain Taqwa. That is the right way for Du’a. 
 
It may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you. 
 
So we must make Du’a to Allah, then be patient, have faith in his unquestionable decision and trust His absolute wisdom. Never have this impression that Allah Almighty has opened the door of making Dua but has closed the door of answering it. Sometimes Allah delays answering the Du’a to give a greater reward and a further blessing. What a catastrophe it would be if Allah answered every prayer at the snap of your fingers. Do you know what would happen? Allah would become your servant, not your Master. Suddenly Allah would be working for you, instead of you working for Allah. Remember, Allah’s delay is not Allah’s denial. Allah’s timing is perfect. Patience and trust is needed. 
 
If I were to summarize the whole concept of Du’a into one single statement, it would be this: 
 
Du’a is a form of Ibaadat, such a powerful Ibaadat that it can create and alter Qismat. 
 
So the moral of the story is that where there is du’a, there is hope. It should always be your pot of shining gold at the end of the rainbow, your hope in times of despair, your silver lining in every dark cloud… 
 
If you want your wishes to come true, career progression, bonus , salary I suggest you throw your head in Sujud, and cry your heart out, asking ALLAH AZZA WAJAL, like you have never asked Him before: I suggest you ask for all the things which are missing in your life, ask him to remove your grief and sorrow, to give you what you always wanted. Above tell Allah that you love Him very much. 
 
Believe me, it will not come all at once, but IA came. Ask from your heart. So in the 2nd Khutba we will recite another new dua from Imam Ghazali’s work: 
 
Conclusion of the First Part of the Khutbah: 
 
We make Duas to ASWT, so that he will accept all our Ibadat & forgive our sins. 
 
Sit down & make a du’a yourself. 
 
Second Khutbah: 
 
All Praise is due to Alláh, We praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our own evils and our own bad deeds. 
 
Anyone who is guided by Alláh, he is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. 
 
I bear witness that there is no god but Alláh, the Only One without any partner; and I bear witness that Prophet Muhammad, SAW, is His servant, and His messenger. 
 
“O my Allah! From abundance we desire the abundance of Your blessings 
 
and from purity we desire its permanence 
 
and from Your mercy [we desire] that we be included in all matters] 
 
and from good qualities [we desire] their completion 
 
and from your rewards [we desire] the reward which is the most common 
 
and from your plenitude [we desire] the plenitude which is the sweetest 
 
and from your favours [we desire] the favour which is the most plentiful 
 
and from deeds [we desire] the deed which is the best 
 
and from knowledge [we desire] the knowledge which is the most beneficial 
 
and from the sustenance [we desire] the sustenance which is the most plentiful. 
 
and of protection we desire its duration; 
 
and of health we desire its attainment. 
 
Of livelihood, we ask its increase and its comfort; 
 
and of life; [we desire] its real success and its happiness 
 
and of blessings its totality; 
 
and fulfil for us our hopes beyond expectations. 
 
and enjoin us with well-being and good health 
 
and favour us with the removal of our faults. 
 
In You is our trust and upon You our dependence. 
 
O Allah, strengthen us on the road of sincerity 
 
and righteousness and protect us 
 
in this world from that which will be cause 
 
for regret on the Final Day. 
 
Lighten for us the burden of our sins 
 
and bestow upon us the blessings of those 
 
who had lived a life of Righteousness, 
 
and be sufficient for us and avert 
 
from us the evils of those who do evil. 
 
O Most Mighty, Most Merciful, Most Generous; 
 
the Veiler (of faults), the Gentle One, the Potent. 
 
O Allah… O Allah… O Allah… O Allah… 
 
O Merciful… O Merciful… O Merciful… 
 
O most Merciful of the Merciful… 
 
the First of the First and the Last of the Last. 
 
The Possessor of unshakable Power. 
 
The most Compassionate to the poor 
 
and the destitute. 
 
O most Merciful of the Merciful.

“There is no God except You, Ya Allah so Glory be to You.

May the blessings of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammmad,(SAW) his family and all of his companions. 
 
Ya Allah, forgive all our Muslim men and women, 
 
Forgive the believing men and women, 
 
Those who are alive and those who died, 
 
You are indeed the One who listens and accepts all supplications. 
 
Ya Allah, accept our Ibadat and forgive us. 
 
Ya Rabb, have mercy on us. Help us obey you and praise you. 
 
Ya Allah, we stand before you having observed all the tenets of Islam, so lead us to prosperity and growth, to triumph and solidarity, to unity and wealth beyond our imagination. 
 
Ya Allah, we beg for your MAGFIRATAK, and ask you for success, health and wealth for all the brothers who are present here and now in this blessed room. 
 
Ya Rabb, increase our love that binds us together now, and in the future to come. 
 
Ya Allah, accept all our duas, fulfil all our righteous wishes, fulfil our dreams,. 
 
Ya Allah, may your rehma and safety encompass all our families, wherever they may be. 
 
Ya Allah, grant these brothers who are present, here and now, SABR that is YUHIB HUM AS SABR. 
 
Ya Allah, make the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) intercede or YASHFAAH on our behalf on YAWM A QIYAAMAH. 
 
Ya, Allah, grant these brothers wealth, beyond their imagination, so that they may spend rest of their remaining life doing your dhikr and ibadah, praising you.

Islam provides us with the astonishing details of the creation of Adam.  Both Christian and Jewish traditions are remarkably similar yet importantly different to the Quran.  The Book of Genesis describes Adam as being made from “the dust of the earth,” and in the Talmud, Adam is described as being kneaded from mud.

And God said to the angels: 
 
“‘Verily, I am going to place mankind generations after generations on earth.’  They said: ‘Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You.’  God said: ‘I know that which you do not know.’” (Quran 2:30) 
 
So begins the story of Adam, the first man, the first human being.  God created Adam from a handful of soil containing portions from all its varieties on Earth.  Angels were sent to earth to collect the soil that was to become Adam.  It was red, white, brown, and black; it was soft and malleable, hard and gritty; it came from the mountains and the valleys; from infertile deserts and lush fertile plains and all the natural varieties in between.  The descendants of Adam were destined to be as diverse as the handful of soil from which their ancestor was created; all have different appearances, attributes and qualities. 
 
Soil or Clay? 
 
Throughout the Quran, the soil used to create Adam is referred to by many names, and from this we are able to understand some of the methodology of his creation.  Each name for soil is used at a different stage of Adam’s creation.  Soil, taken from the earth, is referred to as soil; God also refers to it as clay.  When it is mixed with water it becomes mud, when it is left to stand the water content reduces and it becomes sticky clay (or mud).  If it is again left for some time it begins to smell, and the colour becomes darker – black, smooth clay.  It was from this substance that God moulded the form of Adam.  His soulless body was left to dry, and it became what is known in the Quran as sounding clay.  Adam was moulded from something akin to potter’s clay.  When it is rapped it produces a ringing sound.[2] 
 
The First Man is Honoured 
 
And God said, to the Angels: 
 
“And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: ‘I am going to create a human (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.  So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him.” (Quran 38:71-72) 
 
God honoured the first humman, Adam, in countless ways.  Allah blew his soul into him, He fashioned him with His own hands and He ordered the Angels to bow down before him.  And God said to the Angels: 
 
“....Prostrate to Adam and they prostrated except Iblees (Satan)....” (Quran 7:11) 
 
While worship is reserved for God Alone this prostration by the Angels to Adam was a sign of respect and honour.  It is said that, as Adam’s body trembled into life, he sneezed and immediately said ‘All praise and thanks is due to God;’ so God responded by bestowing His Mercy upon Adam.  Although this account is not mentioned in either the Quran or the authentic narrations of the Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, it is mentioned in some commentaries of the Quran.  Thus, in his first seconds of life, the first man is recognized as an honoured creature, covered with the infinite Mercy of God.[3] 
 
It was also said by the Prophet Muhammad that God created Adam in His image. This does not mean that Adam was created to look similar to God, as God is unique in all His aspects, we are unable to comprehend or form an image of Him.  It does mean, however, that Adam was given some qualities which also God has, although incomparable.  He was given qualities of mercy, love, free will, and others.

The First Greeting 
 
Adam was instructed to approach a group of Angels sitting near to him and greet them with the words Assalamu alaikum (May God’s peace be upon you), they answered ‘and also upon you be God’s peace, mercy and blessings’.  From that day forward these words became the greeting of those submitted to God.  From the moment of Adam’s creation, we his descendents were instructed to spread peace. 
 
Adam, the Caretaker 
 
God told mankind that He did not create them except that they should worship Him.  Everything in this world was created for Adam and his descendants, in order to aid us in our ability to worship and know God.  Due to God’s infinite Wisdom, Adam and his descendants were to be the caretakers on earth, so God taught Adam what he needed to know to perform this duty.  God mentions: 
 
“He taught Adam all the names of everything.” (Quran 2:31) 
 
God gave Adam the ability to identify and designate names to everything; He taught him language, speech and the ability to communicate.  God imbued Adam with an insatiable need for and love of knowledge.  After Adam had learned the names and uses for all things God said to the Angels... 
 
“‘tell me the names of these if you are truthful.’  They answered ‘Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us.  Verily it is You the All Knower, the All Wise.’” (Quran 2:31-32) 
 
God turned to Adam and said: 
 
“‘O Adam!  Inform them of their names,’ and when he had informed them of their names, He said:  Did I not tell you that I know the unseen in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been hiding?” (Quran 2:33) 
 
Adam tried to speak with the Angels, but they were occupied worshipping God.  The Angels were given no specific knowledge or freedom of will, their sole purpose being to worship and praise God.  Adam, on the other hand, was given the ability to reason, make choices and identify objects and their purpose.  This helped to prepare Adam for his coming role on earth.  So Adam knew the names of everything, but he was alone in Heaven.  One morning Adam awoke to find a woman gazing at him.

Success as a student only comes if one assesses what they are bringing to the learning experience. As a student, you must be aware of not only your study skills, but the presumed philosophies about education, the teacher-student relationship, on line learning, traditional learning and your history as a student/learner. 
 
Many of us find that public schooling has left us without understanding of what 'education' truly is. 
Our natural love of learning, which Allah placed in our fitra as human beings, has been covered up. It is important to understand that the experience of education is different than schooling, and one must rid oneself of the negative impact public education has had on us.

In drawing nearer to Allah, we draw nearer to our fitra, and our love of learning. 
 
Traditional Knowledge 
In deciding to become a student with SunniPath Academy, you have taken the initiative to learn the traditional knowledge presented here. As the student, you are responsible for completing the readings, doing necessary research, asking questions and keeping an open line of communication with your teachers. 
 
There are neither grades nor any responsibilities to any of the staff or teachers. As Imam Zarnuji states in Instruction of the Student, the purpose of study is to 
".strive for the pleasure of God, the abode of the Hereafter, the removal of ignorance from himself and from the rest of the ignorant, and revival of religion, and the survival of Islam." (Zarnuji, p. 5) 
 
We at SunniPath Academy highly recommend that you read Imam Al-Zarnuji's book in its entirety. 
As a starting point, here are a few of the methods of learning Imam Al-Zarnuji recommends to students. 
 
Each point is expounded upon in great detail in the book:

<li>Pure intention, sincerity, and high resolve</li>
<li>Seeking Allah's assistance, through earnest supplication. Among the Qur'anic supplications for seeking knowledge is, "O Lord, increase me in knowledge." [Rabbi zidni `ilma]</li>
<li>Respecting knowledge and those who have it, for the sake of Allah.</li>
<li>Earnestness, perseverance and diligence in the pursuit of learning</li>
<li>Being organized and not overwhelming oneself-rather, to strive for consistency.</li>
<li>Relying on Allah entirely.</li>
</ul>
Choosing the best times for study, which are those went one's mind is clear and one does not have other distractions-such as dawn and late evening. Take notes, in all lessons you attend, and of all beneficial knowledge you hear or read. In this way your knowledge will be firm. If you try to just memorize, it will flee. Be wary of what you eat, that it is pure and not contaminated, both physically and spiritually. Be wary of falling into idleness, excessive sleep, or wasting time through idle talk. 
Sit facing the Qibla, whenever possible.

How to increase memory 
Memorizing and retaining knowledge is a skill. Like other skills, it takes practice to perfect. The following are some of the recommendations of scholars: 
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Be industrious and committed</li>
<li>Be patient, repeat what you are trying to memorize, and then review it regularly</li>
<li>Try to memorize when you mind is clear of concerns</li>
<li>Reduce your eating</li>
<li>Increase night prayer</li>
<li>Read Quran</li>
<li>Send blessings on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace)</li>
<li>Use a siwak</li>
</ul>
Acquiring Knowledge 
The Companion of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), Mu`adh ibn Jabal (Allah be pleased with him) said, 
"Acquire knowledge because doing so is good. Seeking it is worship. Reviewing it is glorifying Allah. Researching it is jihad. Teaching it to the ignorant is charity." 
 
Serving the scholars is a way of drawing near to Allah because knowledge is the path of ascension to the stations of Paradise . It is a companion in isolation and a comrade in distant lands. It speaks to you in solitude. It is a guide to prosperity and a shield against adversity. It beautifies one among friends and is a weapon against enemies. With it Allah elevates people and makes them guides and bellwethers of good. 
 
"The scholars are people whose words are sought and whose actions are imitated. The angels long for the scholar's company and comfort them with their wings. Everything, the fish of the sea, the beasts of the earth, the predators of the land and sea, and the cattle pray that blessings come upon him. 
 
"This is because knowledge enlivens the heart against ignorance, illuminates the eyes against darkness, and strengthens the body. It transports the servants to the mansions of the select and the righteous and to the highest ranks in the world and in the Hereafter. Contemplating it is equivalent to fasting, and reviewing it is equivalent to the Night Prayer vigil. With it, kinship is united and the lawful is distinguished from the unlawful. Knowledge is an imam which leads to righteous actions. It is craved by the people destined for Paradise and shunned by people destined for Hell."
